Hex: Witchcraft Community

Hex When one thinks of the word “hex” they likely think of witches casting evil spells on or putting a curse upon an innocent individual. Interestingly enough, the word actually stems from the German word “hexe” which translates to “witch” and “hexen” which means “to practice witchcraft.” The first instance of hex being used as a noun meaning “magic spell” was recorded in 1909. In the Pennsylvania Dutch community, hex signs are commonly seen painted on barns and homes as both decoration and as a symbol for protection. In the witchcraft community, a hex is a spell or ritual typically designed to cause harm to someone, although …show more content…
While there may be cases where casting a hex on a person or situation is appropriate, I do believe that hexing a person borders on being unethical. Hexing can come with hefty consequences as we are taught that all of our actions, good or bad, come back to us in one form or another times three. Since a hex interferes with an individual’s free will, I think it is something that should be avoided in most cases. On the other hand, using hex signs in working magick can be beneficial and safe as long as you have no intentions of causing harm to …show more content…
When you cast a hex, you are not necessarily sending out negative energy, although that can be the case. An example of a hex that would be considered negative, or dark, would be a hex designed to cause an adversary to fall down a flight of stairs. This spell is designed to bring physical injury to another, and as such should be used with extreme caution as the Law of Three tells us that everything we do, good or bad, will be returned to us times three. An example of a hex that would not be considered to be unethical or “dark” would be one designed to prevent an enemy from bringing harm to you or your family. This may change their course of action, and it may be done without the person’s permission, but it is not causing harm to that person. Hexes can be seen across various practices including witchcraft, Voodoo, and Shamanism. A hex is not something that should be approached lightly, as whether your intentions are good or not, you may face negative consequences. All courses of action should be thought out thoroughly to assure the best possible

From about 1480 to 1700, a witch craze spread rampantly throughout most of Europe, more specifically in the southwestern region. More than 100,000 so-called “witches” were tortured and executed after being accused of witchcraft, along with their alleged connection with the Devil. The three main reasons for the oppression of these citizens were religious reformations, social descrimination, and financial greed. This craze landed during the same time as the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution.…

When playing Witch Mafia on Friday, the objective of the game is to kill the Black Man, but instead we ended up killing nearly all of our townspeople. Like the Puritans, we came up with faulty and stretched reasons for why one of the townspeople was guilty, simply because we needed to kill someone, yet did not have any real evidence for doing so. Some of the people in the class did not feel one way or another about a person, and their votes were cast as swing votes. The swing votes were mostly determined by who had the most elaborate and elongated analogy. Sometimes the analogies made sense, but when the person was expressing their idea in a very intense way, it was easy for others to succumb to that idea instead of going with their better…

What started as curious young girls playing with the idea of mysticism quickly escalated into one of the most infamous trials in United States history. The puritan community of Salem has become married to notions of hysteria, mystery, and dark magic. However, through the investigation of Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum in their book Salem Possessed: The Social Origins of Witchcraft, the roots of the trials are revealed to be community based. If the events of the witch-trials are seen as symptoms for socio-economic tensions between the Salem Town and Salem Village, a clearer picture begins to form of the events’ true motivation. By focusing on the divisions in the area within the set up of the town, factions within the village, and WHATEVER…
