Heteronormative Culture And Bilingual Analysis

According to Wade and Ferree (2015), heteronormative means “that everyone is heterosexual unless there are signs indicating otherwise” (p. 355). Therefore, in a heteronormative culture, there is an assumption that everyone is attracted to the opposite sex. I think it would be difficult for a homosexual to live in a heteronormative culture. Anyone who is not heterosexual will have a hard time fitting into their culture and that can be extremely lonely. Wade and Ferree (2015) found that “gender conformity may make same-sex sexual orientation invisible, even to other minorities” (p. 98). It is hard for sexual minorities to find others like themselves in a heteronormative culture, but they also have to deal with the fact the minorities are “invisible”

Whether it is bisexuals and trans* individuals on one side, with gay men and lesbians - both monosexual identities - on the other, or with bisexuals paired with gay men and lesbians as a cohesive group of deviant sexualities against heterosexism, or with bisexuals grouped with all of the other identities that ‘love men’ against lesbians, or with bisexuals against all monosexuals, the understanding of their identity sheds light on the dualistic nature of Western thought. Until the idea of ‘homosexual’ and ‘heterosexual’ became widespread in the United States and Europe, bisexuality could not even be considered. Even still, the binary way Western Culture perceives most things is incongruous with…

Therefore the erasure and imposed invisibility of the transgender community can be attribute to a variety of individuals and communities. This is so due to the prejudices against intersections of identities such as race, class, and refusal to adhere to strict assumptions of what gender is meant to look and act like. [Next Body Paragraph: I will discuss the topic of transgender visibility and how transgender people are talked about/not talked about. The way this practice disappears people that identify as queer is that it classifies their sexual practices as deviant; “sexual deviance in terms of unorthodox sexual desires” (195). Wilkerson also says,” Even less recognized is the strategic value of sexual stereotyping and other sexual harms as significant in perpetuating inequality in any oppressed group” (195). The more stereotypes are promoted the more it oppresses and divides a certain…

In my role as the Bilingual Outreach Coordinator for San Benito County, I’m tasked with the responsibility to recruit, train, and retain an active high school poll worker database (over 150). The database is used to employ poll workers, surveyors, interpreters, and outreach volunteers. Unfortunately, there is not enough known about best practices in this area, and there is no uniformity throughout the programs. Often outreach work consists of trial and error. I’ve found over the past years that long-term relationship building with community-based organizations is the most effective approach.…

For heteronormativity we look at being straight as the only sexual orientation. The examples I used were Henry being able to talk freely about his emotions towards Dorian. These emotions consisted of Henry calling him handsome and romantic. When we look at the theory homosocial, it is similar. Men can bond with men and not be homosexual.…

Imagine being locked in a room full of strangers for nine hours a day, without any means of communication, not understanding a word said, and yet being lectured and questioned on subjects essential to life. Having difficulty communicating with teachers is an everyday issue for thousands of students across the United States, and as the efficiency of the public school system is constantly under debate, the question of whether or not bilingual classrooms are an efficient method that improve the education of bilingual students. In “Aria: A Memoir of Bilingual Childhood,” a memoir written by Richard Rodriguez and published in his book Hunger of Memory in 1982, Rodriguez disagrees with the idea that by implementing bilingual classes, schools aide…

Heterosexism is the social construction of behaviors and beliefs that heterosexuality is the only acceptable form of sexual expression. Institutions with a heterosexism view, negatively sanction those who act or think otherwise. This social structure creates privileges for those who believe in heterosexuality and denies those privileges to homosexual relationships, which often leas to homophobia. An example of heterosexism can be found in…

Interactions between high and low context cultures can be problematic, which may explain the dissonance between Israel and the UAE. According to authors John Cragan and David Wright (1999) low context cultures are not known for their ability to tolerate or understand diversity, and tend to be more insular. With that being said, the presentation needs to reflect the cultural tendencies of all involved. The primary mistake that we should avoid in multi-cultural business meetings is assuming cultural similarity. Cultural assumptions based on a common business goal with people of different background, goals, and aspirations will prove dismal if preconceived notions are decided on prior to meeting.…

In chapter 8 it discussed a reason why we have to teach a balanced bilingual curriculum in the classroom. The textbook “Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism” by Colin Baker expressed the cognitive theories of bilingualism and the curriculum. There are three theories that make up the cognitive theories for bilingualism; The Balance Theory, The Iceberg Analogy, and The Thresholds Theory. Within the Iceberg Analogy it broke town the 6 parts of the Common Underlying Proficiency. Also within the chapter the book did a great job of discussing the distinctions between basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS) and cognitive/academic language proficiency (CALP).…

Another aspect of culture is language since it is a tool for communication and without it, culture cannot be transmitted to the next generation. Since I was raised bilingual – I was taught both Arabic and English throughout my schooling and I was taught Urdu and Hindi from the age of 3. Since I had to learn so many languages from a young age it made it harder for me to differentiate one from another, especially between Urdu, Hindi and Arabic. Moreover, I would end up translating from one language to another in my head which in most cases didn’t make sense. I still have a hard time with languages since I was taught British English throughout my schooling which is quite different from American English in terms of phrases, spellings, humor, etc.…
