In the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, there is a women named Hester Prynne. She committed the crime of adultery, she kept Chillingworth’s secret from Dimmesdale, and she often referred to Pearl as an evil imp. Although she did all of these actions, she still gave her surplus amounts of money to charity and counseled women so that is why I think she is an example of the best citizen. Hester, even though she doesn’t have a lot to give, gives excess amount of her clothing and money to charity. The book says, “Hester bestowed all her superfluous means in charity, on wretches less miserable than herself, and who not unfrequently insulted the hand that fed them” (58-59). Hester acknowledged that she committed a very bad crime, but she knew she could try to make up for it and learn from her experience. People often looked upon her scarlet letter as something she should be ashamed of, but Hester came to learn that people should worry about themselves. …show more content…
After he agreed for Hester to keep her, the governor’s odd sister wanted Hester to meet the devil in the forest, she says “Wilt thou go with us to-night? There will be a merry company in the forest; and I wellnigh promised the Black Man that comely Hester Prynne should make one” (81). Hester smiled at her and gladly refused the offer. She did this because she had Pearl in her life now, and she cared a lot about her. She says that if the governor took Pearl away from her, that she would go with the witches into the forest.
