Hester Prynne wears the scarlet letter and is a compassionate and determined individual. She has committed adultery and as a result, is sentenced to spend several months in jail where she gives birth. She also has to stand on the scaffold in the center of town for several hours, and is condemned to wear a large letter “A” on her chest for the rest of her life. Hester displays great strength of character and is very determined, as demonstrated by her refusal to “reveal his name”(44) when pressed by the town’s ministers.
