Chillingworth begins to push Dimmesdale for more answers and finds something on the ministers chest while he’s asleep and rejoices. The doctor uses this to get revenge on Dimmesdale and causes the minister to lose trust in his physician and see images at night, like physically hurting himself, and himself on the scaffold paying for his sins just as Hester did. Dimmesdale arrives at the scaffold that night and sees Wilson passing him, but the other man does not even notice that he’s there. The minister begins to imagine what it would be like to confess in front of the entire town, and is later joined by Pearl and Hester. He promises to admit to his sins on Judgement Day and a meteor suddenly appeared and created a red “A” in the sky. Dimmesdale then notices Chillingworth in the distance, but Hester, unable to reveal his identity as sworn to secrecy, allows Pearl to, but she tells him gibberish as a way to punish him for not confessing to be her father to the town.
