Hester Prynne: From A Good Mother To Pearl

Good moms come in all shapes and sizes and they each have their own story. Well in this case, Hester Prynne is a good mother to Pearl. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, there are many times where Hester has been questioned for her responsibility of Pearl. Hester is a good mother to Pearl because she values pearl, protects Pearl and provides for Pearl. Overall, Hester cares and loves Pearl because she is always there for her and Pearl has grown up to be a very successful women.
First, Hester values Pearl. It is shown throughout The Scarlet Letter that Hester will do anything to keep Pearl. While at the Reverend's house, Dimmsdale, Reverend Wilson, Governor Bellingham, and Chillingworth all questioned Pearl and were deciding if they want to remove Pearl from Hester but Hester claims she will do anything to keep Pearl in her care. “I must tarry at home, and keep watch over my little Pearl. Had they taken her away from me, I would willingly have gone with thee into the forest, and signed my name in the Black Man’s book too,

Hester does not like Roger Chillingworth, but it does not help that he is one of the only leeches in Hester's town. At the beginning of the book, Pearl was ill and needed medicine. Chillingworth then came and visited Hester in prison and gave Pearl some medicine. At first Hester is very hesitant to give Pearl the medicine that Chillingworth is giving because Hester thinks Chillingworth may have poisoned it, trying to harm Pearl. “What should ail me to harm this misbegotten and miserable babe? The medicine is potent for good, and were it my child-yea, mine own, as well as thine! I could do no better for it.” (Hawthorne 67). This quote is said by Chillingworth and he is saying that is would do him no good to harm Pearl and that the medicine is going to help Pearl get better. Hester gives in and lets Chillingworth give the medicine to Pearl and a few minutes later Pearl had stopped moaning and is
