What is the meaning of being a hero? Some people believe that a hero is someone who wears a cape and has impressive superpowers such as flying or super strength. Others believe a hero is someone who has performed a “heroic act” such as rescuing a cat from a tree. There are several definitions for this little word. But a true hero is someone who is selfless and puts others in front of them before they worry about themselves. They are willing to be in tough situations and show strength and courage. These are also people that others look up to as their role model. Some people that can be considered “heroic” are firefighters, police officers, and soldiers in the nation’s army. But in the story of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, none of these heroes are mentioned. A woman by the name Hester Prynne makes one big mistake that changes her life forever. But as she moves on through life, she spends her time caring for others rather than feeling sorry or guilty for herself. As the story goes on, Hester’s heroic qualities begin to emerge from her love for her daughter, Pearl, and her lover, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. The Strong, Sinful Woman Hester Prynne was ostracized by the society around her for many years following the birth of her daughter Pearl. Since the day she walked out of the prison door people were calling her names and saying she should be put to death, but no matter how many hurtful names the townspeople came up with to throw at her, she always accepted them and said nothing in return. Hester’s crime of adultery went against the town’s religious morals because that strictly disobeyed one of God’s rules. The women of the town tyrannized Hester, but along with the pain and loneliness she experienced, she reacted with generous charity and tolerated isolation from the people around her. A hero is anyone who has the ability to express themselves. In the past, the definition of a hero was much more narrow than in the current day. The Scarlet Letter is much more than a simple story told about a woman that had to go through hardships because of a sin (crime) committed. The Scarlet Letter is able to depict a portrait of the early Puritan ages of the “new” land, America during the 1600s. Although, for present day circumstances the punishment and obstacles that Hester faces are irrational and quite silly, during the 1600s, it was ideal and necessary to form the idea of a Christ centered nation and through punishments, like Hester’s, it could be accomplished. Hester makes the decision to be passive aggressive and because of this, she is able to show that she is the boldest character. Hester Prynne is daring yet submissive and an overall good mother to Pearl despite the circumstances…

The Scarlet Letter itself has a myriad of meanings, but all meanings are centered on Hester Prynne. When discussing the complex meaning of the literal scarlet letter, one must first consider Hester Prynne. When Hester debuts her embroidered letter it is said that Hester and the letter are forever bound. Hester is forced to display the red “A” on her bosom, and her humanity is stripped away by the Puritan community to become a symbol. The “crimson velvet” (pg. 57) letter evolves throughout the story, it constantly changes.…

As the community comes together to witness the shaming of Hester Prynne for the grievous crime of producing a child without her husband’s presence, one of the women states, “At the very least, they should have put the brand of a hot iron on Hester Prynne’s forehead”(Hawthorne 42). The extreme sentiment demonstrates none of the compassion one might expect from a people who had set-forth on a perilous journey seeking freedom from tyranny and persecution. The venom with which it is spewed, which suggests the actual branding of a fellow human being, is as disproportionate to the perceived injustice in the community as to indicate a personal threat to the speaker. Another woman says, “[Hester] has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die”(43).…

I don’t believe that Hester Prynne is a heroic figure. By definition, a hero is one who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Based on the novel, Hester is a sinner and criminal reprimanded for her actions with Arthur Dimmesdale by both the townspeople, forcing her to wear the scarlet letter, by Roger Chillingworth, who torments her husband, and even her daughter Pearl, who is a living reminder of Hester’s passion. Hester does nothing to earn admiration, outstanding achievement, or courage. She never rose up to meet any challenge.…

Who Am I? In this unit of Romanticism, I was able to delve further into what it means to be my own person by looking at the duality of Hester’s sense of self. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester has an internal sense of self but because of external expectations, her sense of self changes and conforms to her environment. From this discovery, I realized that we, humans, all have an internal sense of who we are and what we stand for but at the same time we adjust ourselves because of how we internalize the external expectations of our community. I relate greatly to Hester in this novel because her sense of self seems to be unclear.…
