At the beginning of the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, not much is known about the character and the protagonist of the story. Even in the first few chapters, we only gather that her name is Hester Prynne and she is in the town’s depressing jail. As you continue to read, however, you discover she is in jail because she has a child. This act byself is not a crime, except for the fact that Hester is married and her husband is abroad. Because of her obvious adultery, she is forced to wear a red A on her clothing at all times, which automatically makes her an outcast.
