Hesiod And Theogony

The Prediction of Woman in the Works of Hesiod and Genesis The works of Hesiod, Works and Days and Theogony, and Genesis both explain the origin of the first woman and her role on Earth. However, in Works and Days and Theogony by Hesiod, Pandora was portrayed as a different kind of race than mankind because she was created from water and clay as a way for Zeus to take revenge on man for having fire. Therefore, Pandora serves as the balance to the good when she opened the jar that releases the misery and disease onto mankind. On the contrary, Genesis predicts Eve as Adam’s partner in the beginning since she was created from his rib. However, due to her curiosity, she brought on God’s punishment to both herself and Adam.

The Thoegony or the genealogy or birth of the gods is a poem written by Hesiod in 700 B.C, describing the genealogy of the Ancient Greek gods. Hesiod was a poet who lived around 700 B.C, and is one of the rare poets whose compositions survive to this day. Hesiod was always compared to Homer; it is uncertain who was born first, but both lived around the same time due to the similar epic dialect of Homeric Greek. It is believed that the Theogony was probably influenced by some Near-Eastern traditions such as the Babylonians, who were mixed with local traditions; while some suggest that the Mycenaean traditions might also have an impact on the Theogony.…

Roman and Greek mythology consist of multiple interpretations of how the creator, be it the gods or nature, contributed to the birth of the world. These stories draw the backgrounds of the gods and goddesses that govern much of classical mythology. Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Hesiod’s Theogony are two pieces of work that account for how our universe came to be. A comparison of Theogony with Metamorphoses reveals that Hesiod’s creation story portrays the deities as having an omnipresent, powerful function who are at the center of the universe’s creation whereas, in Metamorphoses, the gods do not play a significant role; rather the humans are at the center of the creation.…

Despite her apparent eloquence and knowledge, Eve is still oblivious to the consequences of her crime. After eating the fruit, she continues to embrace her sin by glorifying and comparing herself “in knowledge.” She only worsens her sin by declaring that God envies her and her new gift. Eve’s love for Adam is then put into question: while she cares for him and wants nothing more than his happiness, she is lulled towards the idea of being “superior; for, inferior, who is free.” Her rationalization, while exposing her logic, only leads her to circle around until she decides to doom the one she loves most; however, it is because of her deep love that “with him all deaths (she) could endure, without him live no life.”…
