I felt that each video was helpful in its' own way. Personally, the 'What Makes A Hero' video was the most helpful/informative video for me. Basically, it explained the common Hero's journey archetype which takes place in many stories. Essentially, the hero in a story is the archetypal predecessor of all humankind in general. The modern day hero is a culmination our ancestors' experiences over many generations. All societies have similar hero stories not because they coincidentally decided to follow a successful storytelling pattern, but because heroes express a deep psychological aspect of human existence. Heroes can be seen as a metaphor for the human search of self-knowledge. The hero shows us the path to our own consciousness through his/her

The term “hero” has been around since the late fourteenth century; however, the term is of an uncertain origin (Etymology, paragraph 2). Based upon controversial etymology beliefs, Webster’s Dictionary defines a ‘hero’ as an individual that is admired for his or her great acts or fine qualities. According to Joseph Campbell, the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, an individual must go through the cycle of the hero 's journey. The life of a real life hero is reflected by the epic literary example “The Hero’s Journey” that is exhibited in the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces; therefore, a hero in today’s world must undergo the same twelve stages that are listed in “The Hero’s Journey.” The hero’s journey is known for telling…

“The Hero’s Journey Defined” is an article by Joseph Campbell describing the recurring process that occur through the course of an odyssey. The article articulates the conditions in which a heroic journey can begin and the possible people who might be entangled. The article uncovers the process from departure of the hero to the initiation of the hero through a series of tests and finally the return of the hero back to his original state. The commencement of the journey, or the departure, is the point where the hero steps out of their comfort zone and experiences death from their home life. This beginning on the journey is said to contain supernatural aid, of which helps to guide the hero, the crossing of a preliminary threshold, which signals…

The last step of the hero's journey is the Return. The Return is when the hero is able to come back to the old world with his accomplishments. Sometimes the hero may feel content in the new world and refuse to return to the old world. In order for the hero to fulfill their destiny and become the leader they need to return to their old world. An example of a refusal is when Jack fights against the cops and refuses to turn himself in and go to jail.…

About 2500 years ago, the earliest Greek authors began writing myths about extraordinary heroes that mostly all followed a similar cycle, now known as “The Hero Journey Cycle.” In the modern day and age, authors continue using this cycle as a base for their stories, therefore heroes created now, during the 2000’s have a myriad of similarities with heroes originating from B.C. times. Hence the evident resemblances in the plot of Hercules, a hero from centuries ago, and Ewan Mao, a present-day hero from the story, A Hero at the End of the World written by Erin Claiborne. The two champions were raised to be valiant, making their ordinary beginnings both alike, and superior. Furthermore, Hercules and Ewan are called to adventure by an accident…

RARELY has obedience laid upon me so difficult a task as this of writing about prayer; for one reason, because I do not feel that God has given me either the power or the desire for it, besides which, during the last three months I have suffered from noises and a great weakness in my head that have made it painful for me to write even on necessary business. However, as I know the power obedience has of making things easy which seem impossible, my will submits with a good grace, although nature seems greatly distressed, for God has not given me such strength as to bear, without repugnance, the constant struggle against illness while performing many different duties. May He, Who has helped me in other more difficult matters, aid me with His grace…

English is a topic that many children around the world study. Within an English class, you can learn any number of things ranging from essay formatting to poetry analyzing. This year in English, I have learned about three very important things; debate, essays, and the Hero’s Journey. Debate is defined as a formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sides of a proposition are advocated by opposing speakers, meaning that it takes place in a very professional setting. This was a significant topic for me to learn about because I am an argumentative person by nature, but I am not very adept at explaining my reasons for disagreeing.…
