Hero’s Journey
CALL TO ACTION Blip. Blip. Buzz. Text messages one after another came on Asian Name’s iPhone screen. They read, “Where are you? We’re waiting! Don’t forget the vodka! You promised to bring it.” Instead of hurrying out the door, she slowly walked toward her dresser and stared at herself in mirror. Her narrow, oblong face with prominent cheekbones and that small cleft chin were so abhorrent. Her slit-like eyes were mere dabs of royal blue that sat below her excessively thick, dark, high arched eyebrows. Her bleached blonde extremely thin hair from years of hair dye hangs to her right side. Frowning, she took her dark red lipstick and smeared it over her huge lips. It took a lot of work for Asian Name to get her thick full lips. The plastic surgery had a lot of

Her hands tightly tied with a rusted chain. 2 black ribbons tied around her mouth and her eyes. She started screaming and yelling, only to sense a man sitting near her. Tears fell down her face as the evil man brushed at a strand of hair behind her ear. She jerked her head back. The evil man grabbed her arm and dug his nails into her. “It is in your best interest to stay on your good behavior. You will be quite useful pretty soon.” He stated. Enraged, Asian Name tried to free herself. She struggled with the chains, trying to sway her arms in awkward positions. Apparently, she had angered the man, so he hit her. Hard. Garish purple splotches, roughly the size of a fist appeared on her face. . Over the course of a few days, it wasn’t limited to just the bruises. There were scars too. Lines across her body, like someone or something had dug his nails into her, tearing her flesh. As if someone had clawed away at her. The gashes told the whole story. It came to the point that one could hardly bear to even look at her. But that didn’t matter. No one was there to even look at

The term “hero” has been around since the late fourteenth century; however, the term is of an uncertain origin (Etymology, paragraph 2). Based upon controversial etymology beliefs, Webster’s Dictionary defines a ‘hero’ as an individual that is admired for his or her great acts or fine qualities. According to Joseph Campbell, the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, an individual must go through the cycle of the hero 's journey. The life of a real life hero is reflected by the epic literary example “The Hero’s Journey” that is exhibited in the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces; therefore, a hero in today’s world must undergo the same twelve stages that are listed in “The Hero’s Journey.” The hero’s journey is known for telling…

King Arthur and Spiderman are two fictitious characters that are both similar, and dissimilar to each other. In an excerpt from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, he writes about monomyth, which is a twelve step process that is divided into four sections. This represents a continuous cycle that the character in the story must go through in order to complete their journey. King Arthur and Spiderman follow the cycle of the Heroes Journey by events in their lives made parallel to the cycle of the Heroes Journey. King Arthur and Spiderman, although from two different ends of the spectrum, are actually alike, both coming from epic tales of struggles and triumph.…

Sitting at my desk, I stared down at my schoolwork while my mind remained static. Suddenly, I found myself beginning to radiate golden light as my body faded from existence; then before I knew it, I rematerialized out of thin air. This does not happen often, so I was rather confused as I stood atop a cloud, high up in the sky. That is, until I noticed a large, human-like figure appear before me in a holy light. He raised his hands and smiled down at me before bellowing out, “Behold, for it is I; Gabe Newell!”…

She stumbled over the brick line right outside her low bedroom window, quickly wrenching it open to tumble inside unceremoniously. It was a good thing her room was on the ground floor, the low window a good exit, a means to escape without detection. Bothered by her mangled leg, she limped to her bathroom after closing and securing her window latch. Balancing on her bathtub’s rim, she unwrapped the scarf she had tied carelessly around the dusty gash. The red of her blood had seeped into the wine of the cloth, the draining of blood on the battlefield.…

Although bewildered, she soon noticed the warmness on her side was the blood leaking from her left side, along with 3 ribs protruding out the side of her freshly pierced skin. Her left leg, also suffering from the fall, was bruised and noticeably popped out its socket, so her efforts to stand up were futile. The ground on which she now laid quaking violently for minutes, which caused her to lose consciousness. When she woke the quakes stopped -- her eyelids opened ever so slightly, and what she saw soon after left her in awe. Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…
