Heroism The prince is a hero! He has rescued the princess, and now they are going to live happily ever after! In reality, that’s not exactly how heroism works. Heroism happens to be a lot more than saving the damsel in distress, slaying the dragon, and banishing the evil villain. As nice as that sounds, being a hero is about a person’s character. Often, heroes are determined by small acts, rather than large, headliners, such as “Save a Cat from a Burning Building” ones. A hero is someone that is brave, intelligent, and honest; they put others before themselves. To be a hero, one must be brave, intelligent, and honest. In “An Everyday Hero”, George notes that Ana makes sure their daughters “get their schoolwork done, get to the dance academy, and are ready to teach their Sunday school class.” She also ensures that her son “gets to work and makes it to his classes” while always making sure that her husband has “a clean shirt for work”. It’d be very easy for Ana to lay back and relax, but instead she puts her families’ wants before her own, despite the fact that she has cancer and has the “sleepless nights, the unending pain, the constant fatigue, difficulty breathing (“An Everyday Hero”)” and the chemotherapy that comes with it. Parents are intelligent enough to teach their children the basics of life along with other necessary information required for success in today’s society. Parents are honest enough to teach their children the correct information that will benefit them the most. They’re brave enough to put their children’s lives before their own. Parents are also merciful and kind to their children, even when they have a bad day. The difference between a hero and anyone else is his attitude. Heroes are brave, intelligent, and honest while non-heroic people are the latter. Dictionary.com describes a coward as “a person who lacks courage in facing danger, difficulty, opposition, pain, etc.” Basically, cowards are the exact opposite of heroes. How is a person supposed to save himself and others when he is scared of the possibility of complications? Nothing is as simple as “left and right.” In order to be a hero, a person must face hardships. Even Odysseus had to endure danger and couldn’t back down when he got scared. His men were cowards because they wanted to steal and run away. An excerpt from Odysseus reads: “At first my men begged me to take some cheeses and go, then to drive the lambs and kids from the pens down to the swift ship and set sail.” Odysseus’ men were cowards that were not brave enough to face their fear, Polyphemus the Cyclops. Luckily, these cowards had a heroic leader that forced them to keep trying to
