Heroism In The Peloponnesian War

Improved Essays
Heroism is when someone shows great bravery or fearlessness to do something. Both of these speeches were given on the fact of heroic citizens in the past. The “Funeral Oration” was given to the soldiers who not only showed patriotism but heroism as they fought in the Peloponnesian War. This is the same as the address to the nation which was not only given to explain what happened but to also pay tribute to the heroes that were amongst us. Heroes that “rushed up flights of stairs toward peril” and “defied the hijackers and ran the plane in to the ground to spare other lives”. These people, random citizens, showed heroism by risking their lives to improve and save others.

Herodotus tells us that opinion among the Athenian commanders was divided with some opposed to attacking with their heavily outnumbered force. Others, especially Miltiades supported an offensive strategy. Miltiades is credited with persuading the war archon Callimachus through a stirring speech to cast his deciding vote in favour of an offensive strategy. Herodotus in his narrative has Miltiades say ‘If we refuse to fight, I have little doubt that the result will be bitter”. However it has also been suggested that the Greek offensive was based on the apparent absence of the Persian cavalry which Herodotus fails to mention.…

The Peloponnesian War by the end of the fifth century before the common era commenced with Sparta’s fear of Athens’ rising power. Sparta a primitive, economically challenged land power, led the independent states. In contrast, Athens an advanced, economically wealthy sea power, oversaw alliance states. Even though they both were state super powers, there was a noticeable difference in their culture, economic background and how they led the subordinate states of government. As well as, Sparta’s and Athens’ strategic approach to war, in the beginning, was dissimilar but in the end, the tables would turn and the Sparta would be victorious.…

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. Homer develops this assertion by pointing out Odysseus's heroic characteristics in the various trials that he faces. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…

Christopher Reeves once said, “A here is an ordinary individual who finds strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” In modern times a hero is strong, brave, wears a colorful costume and is constantly saving people. It seems as if anyone can be a hero, if they can save a cat from a tree or return a missing child to their parents because the bar for being a hero has been set so low. In ancients times it took so much more for a person to be valued as an Epic Hero, they had to be the most courageous, the most intelligent, and the strongest amongst all mortals. The Greek Gods also took special interest in them and they embodied the traits the Greek people venerated.…

Telemachus hasn’t always been born a hero in any manner but rather had to learn from mistakes and grow as an individual. In the first book of the odyssey, Odysseus home is being occupied by the suitors and Telemachus is still not up to par yet with his way of being that hero, and demanding that the suitors stop taking the sheep and drinking the wine.…

However, Odysseus stood up to him and reminded Achilles that he should give thought to his army and demand rest and proper nutrition, before they affianced the Trojans any further. Achilles gave some thought to this request and acknowledged Odysseus 's guidance. Achilles had built upon his anger all through the night, while his men rested.…
