Despite those kind of people there is another category that is the exact opposite. “‘Are Johnny and Dally all right?’”(Hinton 81). Ponyboy, the main character from the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, was more concerned about his friends’ well being rather than his own. He immediately was questioning about his friends’ health like he wasn’t even injured at all. “There's thousands of veterans right here in our midst. Everyday heros don’t metaphorically cower in their shells or run like a scared little girl. “I felt assured that, if I failed in this attempt, my case would be a hopeless one—it would seal my fate as a slave forever...But I remained firm”(Douglas 92). In Frederick Douglass's autobiography, published in 1845, he explained how he only had this one chance and if he failed he would for sure be severely punished. Towards the end of this though he simply writes that he stay firm, like how a house is build tight to it's foundation. Douglas knew there was danger but he continued to stay strong. Furthermore, In the video Labor of Love, Dick Hoyt said that he couldn’t swim and when he jumped into the lake he couldn’t swim ten feet. Dick Hoyt had a problem in running this triathlon with his son; Hoyt didn’t know how to swim but he didn’t let that stop him. He never ceased to train so that he could do what him and his son love to do together. “‘I'll get them, don't worry!’ I started at a dead run for the church”(Hinton 78). In this part of the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there was a church on fire with some children trapped inside. Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln embody heros because they underwent many challenges in order to fight for liberty and freedom for all. The journey to freedom and liberty was treacherous for Lincoln and Douglass, for example, Douglass attended an abolitionist convention in Nantucket in 1841 at which a man named William C. Collin encouraged him to speak. However Douglass strongly opposed, revealing that, “the truth was, I felt myself a slave, and the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down” (SB pg 72). Contrary to his fears of feeling inferior to the audience, he went through with a speech and later became a large catalyst in the abolishment of slavery. However, heroism is not entirely about courage, dedication is also a vital…

Over 70% of United States workers are unhappy with their jobs, ranging from complete hatred to a lack of enthusiasm (Stebner Workplace Morale). The new found focus on material wealth has pushed the idea of happiness aside for many Americans. Christopher McCandless, however, refused to comply to this tradition. McCandless abandoned many of his material objects, carrying only what he could carry on his back, to hitchhike to Alaska where he believed happiness could be achieved through complete absorption in nature. McCandless’s method of attaining happiness is often criticized, seen in Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild, for being “reckless” (Krakauer Author’s Note), as McCandless’s journey North evidently led to his premature death. While McCandless’s…

Though, happy with his escape from a life of slavery, Douglass is conflicted in his feelings towards his new life and shows how he grew into being a man with his own will. He displays this inner conflict when responding to questions about his feelings upon escaping slavery, saying, “I suppose I felt as one may imagine the unarmed mariner to feel when he is rescued by a friendly man-of-war from the pursuit of a pirate,” (Douglass 107). He uses this simile to paint a picture in the minds of the readers about how confused and scared he was about this new life he had stepped into. Though he wants to start his life anew, Douglass doesn’t know who he can trust and therefore must only count on himself for food, shelter, and employment, fearing that he might be taken back to the horrors of enslavement at any time. To explain to the readers the fear that he had felt in this moment in time, Douglass urges them to imagine themselves in his position: “Let him be a fugitive slave in a strange land—a land given up to be the hunting-ground for slaveholders... let him place myself in my situation,” (Douglass 108).…
