Heroism In The Giver By Lois Lowry

Improved Essays
In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas, in his quest to find Elsewhere, perishes in an act of heroism from hypothermia and starvation. Firstly, on page 178, the author states that “Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled…” This shows the reader that he is sick and on his way to death. In addition, he is in the middle of nowhere, and Jonas’ ability to persevere cannot save him. He has no prior experiences with danger, and he is unlikely to stay alive through such harsh conditions. Secondly, on page 180, the author tells the reader that “he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing.” As stated earlier in the text, Jonas has already traveled a very long distance

Jonas, the protagonist of Lois Lowry’s “The Giver”, is a hero. For example, after lengthy discussion with the Giver, he decided to leave the community to “find the Elsewhere that they were both sure existed. They knew it would be a very difficult journey.” (Lowry, 158). Jonas rejected an easy life where he would be provided for and ran away from his community to give them back their memories.…

Also, another one on pg. 193, and 195,” People once felt things once… But it will be desperately hard for them.” (things refer to emotions). This evidence shows us what people probably felt like happened when Jonas’s memories returned and how the experience might not be completely alien.…

In Lois Lowry’s The Giver the author suggests that Jonas unfortunately, does not live to see the lights of elsewhere. First. Lois Lowry states that Jonas had been offered the memory of music, but Jonas denied the Giver’s offer. And at the end it said that, “Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music, but perhaps it was only an echo.” This quote suggest that he learned what music was and therefore had lost his life.…

In the book it says, “For a moment he thought how easy it would be to drop beside it [bicycle] himself, to let him and Gabriel slide into the softness of the snow.” (pg. 220-221) Jonas had biked most of his journey, but now he had to put down his bike and walk because the snow was too deep. He throws the bike in the snow, and thinks of giving up and just drop next to the bike. If he thought of giving up, he must have been exhausted and almost unable to keep going. The other quote is, “He cried because he was hungry, and cold, and terribly weak.”…

Breaking all of the laws that Jonas did, and doing things that he didn’t want to do to reach his destiny, he was a true hero for saving someone whom he loved. One example of why I think that Jonas, from The Giver by Lois Lowry is a hero, is that he saved Gabe from a release, which is when the community will kill him intentionally because he didn’t meet the standards of life. When Jonas’s father said at dinner the night before, that Gabe would be released the next day, Jonas got upset and took Gabe with him when he embarked on his journey. I think that the community is wrong for “releasing” citizens that didn’t meet the basic “standards of life”. Some people are born with problems (ex: Dyslexia, Autism, Cerebral Palsy…)…

In the book “The Giver”, by Lois Lowry, the main character Jonas lives in a perfect world. Few people in the community have the authority to make large choices. Although the villagers have the ability to chose some things, to us it would seem like they had no freedom. The Village Elders make decisions for the villagers. Without choices, people cannot make erroneous decisions, leading to a safer and much more efficient community.…

“Enough fine weather and money and a few memorable meals makes any place desirable”(McCracken). In The Giver by Lois Lowry there is a community that is like the perfect world. It makes it try to seem that everything is perfect and that nothing is wrong. In the article “Haiti in crisis” by Bryan Brown and Patricia Smith they are telling us all the things that are going not very well. The Giver was about how the citizens needed a perfect world to live in and so they created one.…

Every memory he has had transmitted to him he has taken something away from the memories have taught him something new whether it's negative and painful or exuberant and exciting. In the book Jonas explains how much he has learned and is beginning to understand from all of the memories. “ Although he had through the memories learned about the pain of loss and loneliness, now gained too an understanding of solitude and it’s joy”(page 151). Jonas is learning so much although it might not be the happiest memory he is still benefitting from it in some way.…

Jonas has gone from apprehensive to brave because he experienced new things and was opened up to more memories and started taking a chance. Jonas also went from obedient to rebellious because during his time as receiver of memory the memories he received made him think differently and felt more loose than feeling uptight. By the end of the book Jonas is more confident about things and he is much wiser than before because of all the memories he has. Jonas now sees his community as a community that is not perfect and needs help to fix it.…

A book I read for the classic category was The Giver by Lois Lowry. Jonah lives in a organized world, children are assigned families, jobs, etc. Right before the Ceremony of Twelve where he will be assigned a job was, his family took in a third child (which was against the rules) but it was only temporary and approved by the Elders (the people in charge) this child was named Gabriel. At the Ceremony of Twelves Jonas is "selected" for a special job called the receiver of memory. His training was very separate and different from those of his peers, he was trained alone from a man called The Giver, his training exempted him from some rules and feelings which wasn't experienced in the community.…
