Heroism …show more content…
First, Mr. and Mrs. Frank are selfless when they give the separate room to the Van Daans. Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan say, “That isn’t right. We’ll sleep here and you take the room upstairs… It is your place.” Mr. Frank responds, “Please, I’ve thought this out for weeks. It's the best arrangement. The only arrangement” (pg 16). The Franks own the building, so the Van Daans think it is best for them to get upstairs. But, the Franks are selfless and give that room up. With giving up that room, they are giving up their privacy for nearly 2 years. Their room is also the common room, so everybody hangs out in there most of the time. They don’t have a room to go to if they get in a fight and need to cool off steam because everyone is in their room. They don’t get any peace and quiet until everyone goes to their own rooms. This is being selfless because they give up something that the members of the annex all have and use to be alone when they need it. Anne is also selfless because she also gives up her own privacy when Mr. Dussel joins the families. Mr. Frank asks if Anne has any problem sharing rooms with the new member and she responds with, “No. No, of course not.” Anne is also giving up her privacy like her parents did earlier in the play. She goes to her room when she is mad or upset, but now she cannot go to her room to do that because Mr. Dussel is there and he might lecture her as well as the other adults in the annex. They also have to set up times …show more content…
Anne shows compassion for others when she gives everyone a gift on Hanukkah, “ Here’s an I.O.U. that I promise to pay. Ten hours of doing whatever you say. Signed, Anne Frank.” Anne creates unique gifts for everyone out of things she finds in the annex. She gives an I.O.U. to her mother, a crossword book to Margot, Shampoo to Mrs. Van Daan, two cigarettes to Mr. Van Daan, a scarf for her father, a toy for Peter’s cat, a safety razor for Peter, and ear-plugs for Mr. Dussel. These gifts show that she cares for everyone and is thoughtful enough to scavenge up anything she can find to make these presents. Everyone is in much higher spirits and are having more fun when they receive their gifts. This shows Anne is a hero because everyone might be sad they cannot celebrate Hanukkah as they usually would and Anne distracts them from that and creates new traditions and memories. Showing compassion for others is heroism because sometimes people just need some love and that cheers them right up. Another annex member that shows compassion for others is Peter. Peter shows that he cares for Anne when they are in his room talking, “Then suddenly he grabs her arm and turning her around, holds her awkwardly in his arms, kissing her on the cheek.” Peter is Anne's hero because she feels like she is all alone in the annex and nobody understands her. She longs for someone to talk to, and Peter is just that person. Peter gives Anne what she needs, a
