Heroin Treatment Options: Treatment with Methadone versus Suboxone
There has been an increase in the number of people addicted to heroin. With the increase of people addicted to heroin, comes a need for more or better treatment options to help those with heroin addiction. The purpose of this paper is to compare two treatment options with information from three journal articles that have done research on the two medicines. One option is the most common medicine called methadone. The other option is a less common medicine called Suboxone.

Their part in the study was to write about their experience with each drug and the transition and give the narrative to their addiction worker (Tanner et al., 2011). All data collected was then analyzed by a second researcher who developed and analyzed the data and then checked by a senior researcher (Tanner et al., 2011). Five of the twelve individuals who wrote a narrative also stated mental clarity, improved confidence and feeling less stigmatized and productive member of society when on Suboxone compared to methadone (Tanner et al., 2011). Two individuals compared methadone and heroin as switching one habit for another or swapping one habit for another (Tanner et al., 2011). Many of the twelve admitted to using heroin while on Suboxone (Tanner et al., 2011). Methadone has been around longer and has more research has been done on methadone. There is the potential with more research Suboxone will be used more in treating heroin addiction. Suboxone has a possible “blocker” effect and can detour an individual from using heroin. An individual has to go to a clinic each day for methadone where they can get Suboxone as a prescription and take at home. There is a greater stigma for patients on methadone than Suboxone due to the general public not knowing what Suboxone is used to treat.
