Everyone knows about heroine, however most don’t know what heroin is. In the beginning heroin was not referred to as an illegal drug, but rather a treatment for tuberculosis, and a cure for people addicted to morphine in Germany during the late 1800’s. Although, by the late 1900s, it backfired and mortality rates were greater than the population (Heroin: What is it?, 2008).
People can buy heroin either in its purest form, or laced with other substances that will enhance the high as well. The substance is composed of: morphine alkaloid (found in opium), and is “cut” with other substances such as sugar, starch, powdered milk, quinine, or sometimes poisons (What is Heroin?, 2014). A person can begin to crave the drug and feel dependent on it. They also will develop a tolerance for the drug leading to taking much larger amounts to obtain their desired effect. Often times the users hands and feet will begin to swell up and become painful, which may lead to taking more Fentanyl in an attempt to dull the pain (Fentanyl Abuse & Addiction).
