Heroic First Responders On the tenth anniversary of the attacks on September 11, the most important people were not invited to the ceremony. The first responders that were present on 9/11 were not invited. Days before the ceremony, “No Firemen at Ground Zero This 9/11” by Michael Burke was published discussing the importance of the first responders, how much they should be respected and how they need be invited to the anniversary ceremony. He felt as if that they needed more recognition than the politicians that were being invited to the ceremony. During the piece he gives intense details of how important the responders were to the citizens. He pointed out all of the different ways people were honoring them. This was important because the responders made an impact on everyone.“Firehouse across the city became virtual shrines…Professional ball players wore their caps. School children’s drawing honored them” (12). The responders were not just appreciated by fellow first responders, the whole New York state and nationally celebrated the bravery they showed. Another thing it showed is that they made an impact on people all over. The politicians did not sacrifice anything for the attack compared to the first responders. Burke compared the responders to Navy Seals, “‘I feel that the Navy Seals walked in the steps of my brother and all of the other first responders of 9/11,’ I told him. ‘That is just what I told the firefighters this morning, he [President Obama] replied” (15-16).
