It’s 1965, you’re lost in the heart of a small town in Oklahoma, you see a “greasy” young boy get jumped by older, more fortunate boys, who comes to his rescue? Not a superhero in a cape, but a real human, a flawed person with all of their insecurities and past experiences. This is what a real hero looks like. Two unlikely heroes emerge in S.E. Hinton’s young adult fiction, “The Outsiders”. Dally Winston and Darry Curtis are heroes not because they save the town, but because of the little things they do, as Edgar Watson Howe once said, “A boy doesn’t have to go to war to be a hero; he can say he doesn’t like pie when he sees there isn’t enough to go around.” It has been said , “Show me a hero and I will show you a tragedy.” This quote is perfect …show more content…
“‘I guess your folks feel kind of awful about it, too.’ ‘My parents are dead. I live here with just Darry and Soda, my brothers.’ I took a long drag on my cigarette”(140). Darry is a hero because he does what needs to be done and sees it as that. He doesn’t expect praise even when he deserves it. He sees him stepping up and taking care of his brothers as doing what needs to be done not going out of his way to help. His brothers might not always show it, but they greatly appreciate them and know how their lives might have turned out if Darry hadn’t done so. Darry really is a hero, he doesn’t do what he does for praise, he does it because it needs to be done. Heroes in the world of The Outsiders,in any world for that matter come in all shapes in sizes, and for very different reasons. Dally is a hero because he puts others first and sees the good in them, Darry is a hero because he does what needs to be done for nothing in return. Anybody can be a hero so the next time you’re driving through that small town in Oklahoma and you see that boy being bullied, think about who the hero

He may not have been strong or big but he has a giant heart. I think Cherry is a hero because she changed her side for the greater good. She also stood up for what she believed in by stopping Bob and his friends from hurting Ponyboy and Johnny.…

William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying novel explores as well as calls into question the meaning of heroic actions. That all such actions are evident as heroic only from the outside. As I Lay Dying questions the value of heroism by showing how the Bundren’s heroic journey is actually committed in the service of the family’s self- interests. The Bundrens fulfill Addie’s desire to be buried in Jefferson under the guise of heroic including family duty, ultimately rendering the idea of heroism pointless or self-defeating. The novel provides an ironic twist to a hero's journey.…

“Not all those who wander are lost,” a line from the poem All That Glitters Is Not Gold by J. R. R Tolkien tells how even if you are on a journey and you don’t know quite where your destination is, it can be worth the while. In this unit, we learned about multiple journeys that can convey how the journey is important to gain life long experiences and build upon courage in order to set off on your own. On this journey, we can see some heroes, a hero can be defined as someone who even in the smallest of deeds, can help someone in their time of need. For example, if one kid was sick and another kid was to lend him his notes, that could be defined as an act of heroism. Solely because even though it was a small deed, it still meant a lot.…

There are three types of heroes mentioned in pop culture; the superheroes who perform superhuman tasks, however do not exist outside of comic books. The everyday heroes that inspire those who are close to them but rarely make a dent in the world. Finally, there are the true heroes who improve society and inspire people all across the globe. Only one of these heroes actually deserve that title, which is the true hero. A superhero does not deserve the title because their image is so often warped by idolization, that their actual actions often bear no resemblance to the widely-known image.…

Not only does he find that different people have different problems, but little experiences can be the same for any other, such as the sunset. Once he views Cherri's and Randy's perspective without his own ideals clouding his judgment he is able to understand that the sides make no difference unless they are perceived that way. Ponyboy realizes Darry really did love and care for him and just yelled at him at times and nagged him because he didn't want him to get hurt. His fear of "losing another person he loved" (p.98) is what makes him so protective, and it's not that he has no feelings as Ponyboy originally believes, but too many.…
