In the epic poem of Beowulf, the title character undergoes battles that he chooses to face. While reading through the battles, Beowulf shows how he uses the hero’s journey. It can portray how he felt or even how he felt during the journey and adventures that he took.
There were three significant battles in Beowulf: Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the Dragon. The very first battle occurred when Beowulf was asked to help the Danes in a unknown place to defeat Grendel. It started when Grendel starts tearing the doors off the mead-hall and devours a Geatish warrior. Beowulf, at this time, just sits back and observes his opponent. After Grendel’s death, Grendel’s mother ventures out to seek revenge. The battle occurs one night when all the warriors are asleep, Grendel’s mother is traveling to Heorot. Waking everyone up looking for Beowulf, she ends up not finding him and just takes the arm of her son and leaves. Once Beowulf comes back to where all the other warriors are, she is gone. This battle signifies The call of Adventure by him not even knowing about what was going on but to still be the person who fights for this town and people show he is brave. It signifies the ultimate boons, things that he has done for the Danes and the Geats. He receives many different swords throughout the epic poem including: one from Hrothgar, Hrunting from Unferth, a gem-studded sword, and a sword used to kill the dragon. Each of these swords are from someone who has recognized the things he has done. The swords represent masculinity and family honor.
