What Makes A Modern Day Hero? What is your favorite hero? Batman, Superman, Wonder Women, these are popular examples of heroism. No one thinks of heroes such as Hercules, Rick Rescorla, or Beowulf.…
In Beowulf, I found myself idolizing over the strong and fearless hero. He was what I would call “the perfect hero”, because not only did he get the job done, but he did it so with honor and modesty. In some cases it reminded me of the movie Hercules, where Hercules tried to show off as much as possible and show that he was better than everyone else to gain fame. While Beowulf used his famous strength to help those in need not to just gain fame, but because he knew he was undoubtedly the only one who could help.…

In Beowulf, the classic story of the hero and his journey is very closely followed. The hero is often faced with hardship which causes him to go on an epic journey to complete a task for the greater good, he encounters many obstacles along the way, and he succeeds or sometimes makes a crucial mistake and meets his demise. Beowulf embodies the characteristics of an epic hero because he is courageous, strong, loyal to his cause, and wise beyond his years. His epic flaw was that he was not humble and became too overconfident in himself during battle.…
Any and everyone can be the hero Today. Beowulf is a lot more like the superheroes we see in movies than the ones that are actually out there committing acts of heroism every day. Beowulf serves an important purpose of showing what it means to be a hero on a much larger scale, so that the common person can look up to and strive to become the type of hero that he was. Beowulf was a hero that would be common in the earlier, more ancient and even compositions of the adjacent eras but today. But when compared to the hero of today, Beowulf sets a high bar that cannot realistically be matched by any person today.…

To the average person, a hero would be defined as a strong, brave, courageous fighter who isn’t scared of anything and is very confident. And yes, that is a ‘hero’. But though the book Grendel, by John Gardner, we know there are many different forms of heroes. The question is, who exactly is the ‘hero’ in Grendel? I think that Emerson would consider Beowulf to be a hero. It is because Beowulf has qualities that Emerson considers courageous, such as not having a warlike attitude towards eternal evils, being confident, and not concerned about the hard or safest of his tasks, and being undaunted in his pursuit of evil. Beowulf is shown to have a warlike attitude towards eternal evils because he says he will defeat Grendel because he is an evil monster that is killing innocent people. His confidence is shown by him wanting to defeat the monster by its own means. Beowulf is unfazed by the tales of the strength of Grendel and does not fear for his own safety and only seeks to protect the people than Grendel hurts, this shows that he does not worry about the…
Beowulf displays actions of selflessness through out the poem. His first action was by coming over to Heorot and defeating Grendel. After peace is achieved he walks into certain death to stop the terror of the Dragon that has been destroying his kingdom. Instead of having his men join him in battle he sends them off so that he may fight the Dragon alone and not risk other’s lives. After the Dragon is defeated he asks that all the spoils go to all those in the kingdom so that could prosper.…

Beowulf emplified many reasons for being the hero in the story. Beowulf was always there for others and would do anything for them. He realizes he must help the people in need and he carries this quality on throughout his whole life and all of his victories, as well as losses. One example of Beowulf’s selflessness is in lines 257-261 of the poem when Beowulf states that he has only one request; “That I, alone and with the help of my men, May purge all evil from this hall,”. Beowulf is stepping up when no one else will, risks his men lives as well as his own, and wants to rid the Herot of Grendel’s murder sprees. Another example where Beowulf is showing his sense of duty is in lines 264, “...Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to,..”. This example shows his responsibility, as well as loyalty to his lord.…
There are many people in the world that help others, but there is a thin line between being a hero and a good person. The line that separates them is called selflessness. In the story, Beowulf embodies selflessness. He is concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with his own; he is unselfish. Even when Beowulf went to go fight for honor and glory he still fought selflessly.…
An epic hero is often described as the big hero in a story or reading and is also the main character. They often illustrate great qualities including strength, determination, and bravery. Heroes are said to always have a quest, sometimes more than one, and they most likely have helpers or assistants helping them through these quests. During these quests, the evil characters always seem to be after the hero. They must show the qualities of a hero or they would not be able to accomplish their quests thoroughly.…
