The American soldier after WWI was perceived no other than as a “Hero”. Americans welcomed these “War heroes” with immense gratitude and public demonstrations. However, for these “war heroes”, the reality that they found after their return was very different of that one that a ‘hero” should face. The economic recession and rising of social segregation, drove these war heroes to struggle in an economic and social way. After returning home from the great world many of the veterans faced a different panorama of what they were expecting. Thus, the government implemented different plans of rehabilitation to incorporate these ex-soldiers to the workforce. According to the website npr.org “Rehabilitation was portrayed as the process of relearning the simplest daily tasks-- walking or eating with a prosthesis.” All these processes of rehabilitation were guide towards an economic independence through the use of prosthesis. In fact, these devices that were used to replace a lost part of the body, were also made for specific functions. For example, "The Siemens-Schuckert-Works Universal Arm" invented in 1916, was a simple limb prosthesis that was created for labor tasks. Its efficiency and exchangeable pieces made them perfect to be used in any kind of work. This combination of a human being and artificial limb that is used for work proposes recreates the idea of a man as a machine. According to the reporter Thomas Schlich “An amputee veteran would arrive at his workplace in the factory, hook up the remaining part of his limb to the prosthesis, which in turn would be linked to one of the industrial machines in the factory." . Many of the outcomes of these post war experiences had leaded to developed functional systems of creations such as the social security of the advance systems of prosthesis that are used for relief the life of many of the Americas. On the other hand, now there is another reality for the African Americans that were oppressed for many time. Besides these experience was very useful to face tough situations such as WWII.
