People who only do things for themselves are people that would never be thought of in a good way, especially when thinking about them saving someone. Instead of ‘selfish,’ maybe someone might think of ‘selfless’ when talking about heroes. Heroes never put themselves first, because other people’s safety comes before their own in their eyes. Another example of a hero is from A Man. This is about a man who also served in the military, but he had lost his arm. This poem talks about a man who had entered to be in the military and fought for his country, completely aware of all the dangers that would come with it. He didn’t sit back and wait for other people to fight for him, he was of age to join and he knew his country needed him, even though it made him upset he would only be able to do things with one arm. “While fighting for his country, he lost an arm, and was suddenly afraid” (Cassian). But when thinking of ‘hero’ everyone immediately thinks of heroes with superpowers. They think heroes are the people who save people’s lives in a dramatic way, like the ways seen in movies. Like if someone was tied down to train tracks, and the train was quickly making its way over to them, only for the hero to come and save them right before the train got there. Not saying that is impossible, but that is not the only kind of heroism. A hero is someone who has bold characteristics who is not afraid to help someone who may be in distress. People may exaggerate the way a hero should be in their heads, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from holding back to speaking out against any wrong, and doing what they believe is right. To be considerate of others and realize their situation while helping them out is not only a way to be a hero, but just a good person
