What is a Hero?
What is a true hero? When people think of heroes, they often think of the famous, strong superheroes like, Batman, Superman, The Flash, etc. But that isn’t necessarily the case. Heroes can also be everyday people that are selfless and sacrificial, inspiring while facing challenges, and see the brighter side to negative events.
Heroes are selfless and sacrificial. For example, the 9/11 hero, Wells Crowther, aka The Man in the Red Bandana. “A mysterious man appeared at one point, his mouth and nose covered with a red handkerchief. He saved my life.”(“The Man in the Red Bandana”). Crowther was willing to sacrifice his life, without hesitating for many lives. Crowther always thought he would become a part of something big, and indeed he did. Equally important, there were many heroes doing a boatlift during the 9/11 event. “I’ve never seen so many tug boats all at once, I worked on the water for 28 years, I’ve never seen that many boats come together at one time that fast. One radio call and they just all came together” (Boatlift 9/11). Many lives were saved that day because of selfless acts. Any hero would be selfless and sacrificial for the sake of others.

A person of worth personifies the characteristics of having adequate or great merit, character, or value. Desmond Doss incorporates all the attributes listed above and suitably embodies the college statement “ be a pebble of excellence, create a ripple of change.” Private Doss has embodied the college vision statement as he, unlike all his comrades is unwittingly different, choosing to save lives instead of taking. Desmond Doss reflects the college statement because as unlike the other medics and soldier Doss refused to carry any form of weapon, believing that, no matter what situation he would be positioned in, he would not take the life of another human being. Doss’s heroism is now remembered in another form: for the number of lives he had saved and how he created change in his field- as the first conscientious objector to go into battle without any weapon and due to his actions winning the Medal of Honour.…

When asked about his rescue efforts, he responded: “What was so special about it? I only did what any man should have done.” I, too, feel this way when faced infront of numerous situations. I specifically remember standing up to a 5 foot 5, 130 pound bully back in 4th grade because they kept picking on one of my closest and dearest friends. The bully realised what they were doing was wrong and finally stopped.…

Some people do not know that they are even someone’s hero. When a person has the power to stand strong and fight for what they believe in they too can be a hero. These are the type of people that give others hope and save lives each and every day. You do not have to have super powers to save someone, you do not have to be in a position or a career where the main goal is to save someone’s life such as a doctor, a policeman or a firefighter. Heroes can be everyday people, such as a teacher; who teaches kids the everyday essentials of life to grow and be a better person, a parent; who guides and raise their children and protect their children, and even a janitor or trash man; people that help keep the environment clean for our safety and…
