Everyone has a different definition of the word hero. Dictionary.com defines a hero as; “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” I do not agree with this definition for multiple reasons. The first and foremost issue I have is that it explicitly states a man. Heroes can be men, women, children, dogs, cats, et cetera. Not all heroes are brave; some just do what they need to get by. I feel that a hero is a person or animal that has persevered and overcome adversity to be a better person. Heroes go above and beyond to reach their goals and to help others reach theirs. For these reasons and many others, my hero is my older sister Stephanie. Stephanie has never let anything get in the way of her

A hero can be a young girl who decides to donate her shrunken clothes instead of throwing them away. Some people think our society overly tosses the word “hero” around; however, I believe everyone is capable of being a hero. In fact, I believe everyone is a hero, in one way or another.…

The great musician, Gerard Way, said “Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary.” Ironically the word hero has the connotation of being someone or something that portrays the qualities of being supernatural. An everyday hero is one that is characterized by the actions that he/she commits. The hero will always put themselves forward for the humanitarian good to defend against moral evil. The hero always acts involuntarily, the act of heroism will always be done under utilitarianism, and the hero will always act in heroism without the intention of gaining something for themselves.…

When most people are asked what makes someone a hero they think of people with superpowers, who use their powers to fight villains; soldiers who fight for the freedom of their countries; fictional heroes who face challenges along a great journey; or even someone who helps an old lady across a busy street. The dictionary defines a hero as, “A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” All of these characteristics could define a hero, or none of them could, because the word ‘hero’ is a relative term. What makes someone a hero in one person’s mind, might not make that same someone a hero in another person's mind -- being classified as a hero does not necessarily just include…

For the most part the dictionary is correct, but what it doesn’t state is what truly makes someone a hero. In the last seconds remaining, he swooped in and saved the pretty girl from falling off the edge of the tallest building in the world. The masked figure accomplished this goal before rushing towards the destroyed urban city; he continued forward, fully aware, relentless, and unaffected.
