Hermit crabs are a group of crustaceans, part of the superfamily paguroidea, and are well adapted to live in the terrestrial and semi-terrestrial conditions of intertidal zones (Turra and Denadai 2002). As in every environment, there are a number of environment pressures present (Hazlett 1981). Hermit crabs compete for various factors such as shells, space and shelter. It is important for hermit crabs to choose habitats which provide the right sediment type as it can have an influence on the availability of shelter and shell availability. Therefore, it is important to know a hermit crab’s preferred sediment type as it is an important aspect for their survival.
