Hook:
Hi there, Hermann is the name and science is my game.
Introduction and Background info (birthplace, birthdate, any relevant childhood info, relevant relationship info, etc.): I was born on August 31st, 1821. My father is Ferdinand Helmholtz who was the headmaster of Potsdam Gymnasium. My mother was Caroline Penn, she was English. At the age of 17 I found that I began to like physics, but unfortunately I had to work as a military doctor. Although I was still able to study physics and mathematics in the background.
Thesis: Conservation of energy and ophthalmology are what I'm most famous for, but not many acknowledge the fact that I was also a teacher at many different schools/university's.
Main Idea 1: Conservation of energy …show more content…
The law of conservation of energy states that the total amount of energy in a closed off system remains the same. Using previous scientists work, I assumed a relationship between heat, magnetism, mechanics, electricity, and light by treating them all as forms of energy. I published my theories in my book "On the Conservation of Force".
Main Idea 2: Ophthalmology I revolutionized the field of ophthalmology in 1851 by creating the ophthalmoscope which is used to look at the inside of the human eye. I actually created it while preparing to demonstrate the law of conservation. This invention made me world famous over night. My main publication called "Handbook of Physiological Optics" included theories based on color vision, spatial vision, and motion perception. The human eye detects and is sensitive to only three primary colors, this is a theory by Thomas Young. I extended his theory and proposed that the primary colors has its own receptor in the eye to detect it.
