Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha

Improved Essays
The book Siddhartha was composed by Hermann Hesse, this book is about a young Buddhist who is in search for enlightenment. I have chose five songs to relate to the story of Siddhartha, the songs i have chose are “I Still Havent Found What I’m Looking For” by U2, “Find Yourself” by Brad Paisley, “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker, “Good Life” by Onerepublic and “Halo” by Beyonce. Every one of these songs i chose shows much similarity and can strongly relate to the great novel Siddhartha. The first song i have chose is a song by U2 that shares similarity to Siddhartha and his journey to enlightenment. U2 is an Irish rock band established in 1976 who composed this song about a man who is in search of his one and only lover, Siddhartha is also in …show more content…
In this moment when he experiences “Om” the book states “And in the moment when the sound of Om touched Siddhartha's ear, his dormant spirit suddenly woke up and realized.”(Hesse, pg.65) This quote from the book Siddhartha shows a lot of similarity to a line of lyrics in “Good Life.” “Say oh, got this feeling that you can't fight, like this city is on fire tonight, this could really be a good life.” I found much similarity in the quotes because i believe when Siddhartha experienced the feeling of “Om” he realized this could be it, this could be the good life.
The last song that i have analyzed and compared to Siddhartha is “Halo” by Beyonce. In the song Beyonce is singing about a love that is almost heavenly like, a line of lyrics from “Halo” says “ It’s like I’ve been awakened”, this specific line in this song can relate strongly to a part in the book when Siddhartha speaks about being awakened. “I have indeed awakened and have only been born today”(Hesse,pg. 33) Siddhartha says this quote when he believes he has been awakened just as Beyonce sings about it in her 2003 hit

In the first part of Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha, it details the journey that Siddartha goes through with Govinda in their search for Enlightenment. Towards the end of the first part, Siddartha is one step closer to Enlightenment due to his character and view of the world. It is his thoughtfulness and determination to achieve this goal and his shifting view of the world throughout this part that allows him to awaken at the end and realize how he can attain his ultimate goal. Siddhartha’s character is presented as a thinker who is willing to question all that he knows and explore different ideas in order to achieve Enlightenment. This presents itself in the first chapter of the novel in which Siddhartha poses the thought, “did he live in bliss, was he at peace?”…

Für Elise by Beethoven is the song that expresses who I am. When I started playing piano, I got frustrated that most of my family had a natural talent while I didn't. My father talked to me and gave me one of the most important lessons of my life: "Practice makes perfection, if you want something, insist until you get it". After playing piano as a hobby, at age 17 I decided to take my skills to the next level by taking piano lessons at college and I challenged myself to first learn how to play Für Elise. It wasn't easy, but practice made perfection.…

I choose the songs “Walkin’ After Midnight” by Patsy Cline (1957), “Darkest Valley” by Group 1 Crew (2012), and “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been” by Relient K (2004). I choose these three pieces because they are all something that I listen to regularly and they demonstrate a variety of styles in music. Patsy Cline was an iconic female country singer that won awards at the Deejay Convention, won Billboard’s “Most Promising Country & Western Female Artist,” and Music Vendor’s “Greatest Achievement in Records” all just for “Walking After Midnight” (Jones, 1994, p. 159). “Walkin’ After Midnight” music was written by Alan Block and the lyrics were written by Don Hecht ("Walkin' After Midnight." Second Hand Songs - A Cover Songs Database.).…

The Irony of Life Siddhartha throughout the story attempts to find the understanding of life and his true inner self in order to seek enlightenment which he fulfils by venturing off in the world. While on his journey he encounters other human beings in which he develops relationships with. Encountering these relationships allows for love to develop, in which radically transforms Siddhartha. What was the purpose of seeking enlightenment and abandoning your whole family and friends? “‘Seeking enlightenment’ can itself become an identity in you that you get identified with, and hence keep yourself anchored in it, thus defeating the very purpose of the seeking, which was to take you to a place of freedom” (Sen, Seeking Enlightenment).…

The removal of life's suffering broke a unity for Siddhartha, he believes you must balance the yin and yang. A life of salvation doesn't bring knowledge for those who thirst for it (Siddhartha), it can only reconcile suffering to bring happiness in the mist of religion. Gotama showed no promises for Siddhartha to find enlightenment, hearing the Buddha’s words Siddhartha realized there was no formula and teachings to reach enlightenment. A man of religion participates his religious duties as the key of human life to develop wisdom, for Siddhartha he realized religion is not the cause and effect of finding enlightenment. Only an individual experience will be able to guide his search for enlightenment, he cannot rely on religion or teachings.…

Listening to the selections I found they all generally appeal to me though others have more of an immediate preference than others. A genuine love for music creates an appreciation for all genres. One can respect or acknowledge the environment from which it was produced, its purpose, and the skill of the musician(s). I particularly became fond of The Andrew Sisters after experiencing the song “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”. I recall hearing it from a television commercial vaguely, but it was a completely new thing to see and hear them perform it.…

A song I have really engaged with is ‘Savages’ by Marina and the Diamonds. The song raises the question of whether the vicious tendencies in human nature are learnt, or if they are engrained in us. The song itself is quite direct in its lyrics and the tempo and beat of the song combine with this to give the full effect, and helps in making you think about what is really being said. One aspect of the song that made me think was when Marina sings “Were we born to abuse, shoot a gun, and run, or has something deep inside of us come undone?” I found this particular part of the song interesting as it poses the whole question of the song, and it really makes you stop and reflect on the tragic events happening in the world.…
