Max is not the only character who grows up over the course of the film; Herman Blume, a middle-aged man struggling with family issues who also becomes interested in Ms. Cross. Blume is shown as pseudo-confident in several ways. His speech at Rushmore Academy is daring and unrealistic; he is seen jumping fences and into pools with no care in the world. However, the viewer is also shown glimpse into Blume’s mind, making his immaturity apparent. For example, during the revenge montage between Max and Blume, Blume runs over Max’s bike, an immature response to a heartbroken teen’s frustration.
