In the article, “Here's Proof Women Pay More For The Same Products Men Buy” (2015) by Megan Willett, she argues that women are paying more for the same products sold to men. She supports her claim by comparing some products such as razors and face creams, then by stating how much more women pay for each and finally giving an example of a unisex shirt being dry cleaned “Unfortunately, if you were to get these shirts dry cleaned at the same cleaners, you’d find that the “lady-shirt” would cost more than the men’s — in this case, $6 compared to $5.75.” Willetts purpose is to show how gender-based pricing works in order for to have us see that it is discriminating. She establishes an informative tone with her readers. Yes, this is a helpful source

For hourly wage employees the difference between men and women is twenty-two cents (qtd in Boshart par. 1). However, in studies addressed by Bradbury and Katz that twenty-two cent gap increases quickly as the pay increases: “The average female executive within the survey earned 40% less than their male counterparts” (qtd. in Bradbury and Katz par. 5). With the average female officer earning just sixty cents for every dollar earned by her male counterpart, something must be corrected. The Equal Pay Act was passed to allow employees of either gender to sue their employer if they were earning unequal pay based on their gender.…

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that, “It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer … to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, sex, or national origin.” Its goal was to create equality of employment by removing obstacles facing certain classes, such as women. If a law firm had a dress code requiring women in receptionist and secretarial positions to wear high heels, the policy might be challenged under this statute. Courts have taken diverse approaches to applying Title VII and balancing employer and employee interests. Evidence of both adverse health effects and the cultural symbolism…

Roger Smith has argued that, despite the influence of liberalism and republicanism on American political culture, neither ideology is as dominant as we might think. Rather, American political development has been influenced by "multiple traditions," including ascriptive forms of Americanism as well as liberalism and republicanism. Liberalism connotes the idea that the chief aim of the government is to secure individuals against arbitrary restraints, and republicanism epitomizes the idea that the sole end of the government is to secure common goods or interest. Furthermore, Smith argues that the current political culture of America is mainly dominated by the idea of ascriptivism, which is a political idea stating that humans need to develop…

Journal Entry 10 In both articles I see how gender essentialism is being challenged for example in “skincare wars”, skin care is being projected as a way of self-care for women and not as a way of conforming to man’s wants. It makes women feel like they have control over their lives. In “what it means to be a real man”, men are trying to challenge the ideal masculinity and showing how being vulnerable is fine and not something men should be ashamed of. However, there is use of marketing strategies for instance, skin care is now a big trend, most young teens that are women and are going through puberty that have acne ad other skin problems are being targeted because perfect skin is the new “effortless natural look”.…

How many cents are in one dollar? One hundred, right. That’s what we’re taught in kindergarten, but it seems as though many people have never learned that. Many people, specifically employers seem to think that there are 78 cents in a dollar, so they give 78 cents to women, while they give a dollar to men. Now in the real world, where 78 cents does not equal a dollar, this 22 cents gap is known as the gender gap.…

In the past women changed their last name from their father’s last name to their husband’s last name when they got married. Women changed their last name to show a change in ownership from one male, the father, to another, the new husband. Men did not change their last names because they were viewed as the owners. Throughout history women were viewed as property rather than as individuals. In today’s society many women still change their last names when they get married, however it is not necessarily because they are being “traded” as property.…

A Lopsided Fortune Scale: Annotated Bibliography of the Gender Wage Gap Fixing a societal mentality can be difficult to change. Therefore, narrowing the gender wage gap can be quite challenging to achieve. When topics, such as the benefits men have over women, are mentioned, gender discrimination fills the minds of the population. This occurs because people take into consideration the fact that the gender wage gap occurs in every state, happens in nearly every occupation, affects all levels of education and race, and grows with age. As of today, women make up 47 percent of workers, they receive more college and advanced degrees than men, yet on average, still make less than men do (Lukas).…

In society there are many stereotypical roles that have developed in our culture. The key entity to remember about stereotypes is that they do not apply to all, but are just a way for people to come to judgements faster (Brewer). Unfortunately, these stereotypes, particularly those describing women have hindered their ability to be treated equally to men. Many of these stereotypes have to do with the work place and home life.…

Whether it is religion, sexuality, race, or even music taste, people are constantly finding ways to discriminate by differentiating people from each other. One element is gender pay gap--ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, women were always proven to be insignificant compared to men. Gender pay gap plays a negative role--socially, economically, and politically. Although the gender pay gap is a widespread problem that cannot be completely eradicated, society should be giving more of an effort into taking small steps to solving the problem so the future generations could benefit from knowing what is right -- by solving one of the most unfair stigmatized elements in society.…
