The poem that really stood out to me in this week’s readings was “Here Follows Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House” by Anne Bradstreet. I believe this poem really stood out for me because it is something I am working to implement and remember in my own life. This poem from my interpretation is about not worrying so much about material things because they can be gone in an instant, but instead focus on faith. I have worked for many years as a nurse, pouring my heart and soul into what I do. I have also enjoyed to material benefits this hard work has produced; however, since having my son 4 years ago I started realizing there was something missing. Like in this poem I had the house and the possessions; however, I was missing the beauty

This week, our class had the chance to read four interesting poems of Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, We Real Cool, Mad Girl’s Love Song, and Hanging Fire. Each of these poems highlight the important role that imagery and other poetic devices play into an interpretation of a poem and how crucial it is to understand the perceptive of a poem’s speaker. The poem I enjoyed the most this week was Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde. On the surface, Hanging Fire is about a 14 year-old who struggles with typical adolescent things such as bad skin, boy problems, school dances, and braces. However, once we re-read the poem and took the time to analysis it, it because quite clear that teenaged problems are not the only things troubling the speaker.…

In the beginning of the poem Upon the burning of our house, the speaker is upset and angry at God for burning her house and all her belongings. Anne Bradstreet says in the poem “ Yea, so it was and so ‘twas just,/ It was his own; it was not mine./ Far be it that I should repine” (16-18).…

Edward Said once wrote “Exile is strangely compelling to think about but terrible to experience. It is the unhealable rift between a human being and a native place, between the self and it’s true home: its essential sadness cannot be surmounted,” however Said also stated exile can be “a potent, even enriching” experience. The Poisonwood Bible, a novel written by author, Barbara Kingsolver, features a young girl, Leah Price, who experiences exile in both of these manners and is completely changed by her experience while living in the Congo as a missionary’s daughters. Leah Price is exiled from her father, her homeland, and her entire belief system, all of which she believed defined her as a young woman. Through this ostracism Leah develops her own sense of self and is able to grow…

“I starting up, the light did spy, And to my God, my heart did cry to strengthen in my distress” (Bradstreet 69). Bradstreet was born into a Puritan family in 1612 similar to Edwards and died in 1672. Bradstreet’s poem was published in 1650 intentionally to tell her story on her burning house. On the other hand, Jonathan Edwards was a religious Puritan who told his stories to fellow Puritans to make them understand that they have to live by Puritan laws or risk their eternal souls. His sermon was written on July 8, 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut to the sinners to recognize that they will be judged by God and that his judgement will be more fearful than they can comprehend.…

Bradstreet's "Verses Upon the Burning of Our House. " After the burning of her house, Anne Bradstreet, a female poet, reprovingly writes about the passing of materialistic things, in order to show that all wealth on Earth will come to an end whereas the wealth in Heaven is more rich and ever-lasting. Throughout both the sympathetic “Upon the burning of our house, July 10th 1666,” and threatening “Sinners in the hands of an angry god” we have seen the similarities and differences between two pieces from both the 1600s and 1700s. The two puritan writings are unique in the own way yet focus on the general concept of G-d and the afterlife. There is Anne Bradstreet and “Upon the burning of our house, July 10th 1666” which focus’ on her true story of how her house burned down, so she felt that it was necessary by G-d to do that so she could have a better life in the future standing by the almighty one. She dearly hopes this is true with her faith or her life burning in flames was for nothing. Then we have Jonathan Edwards and “Sinners in the…

At one point in a person’s life, they may partake in the step of creating their own family through parenthood. Families, in themselves, mimic their own form of community, typically when the elders, or parents, disperse ideas and beliefs onto children, resulting in a chain of common-thinking. In Arlie Russell Hochschild’s “From the Frying Pan into the Fire,” she discusses capitalism and how people struggle to find a balance between family and work. She shows how great of an impact capitalism actually has on humans. Hochschild promotes the concept that people often separate the idea of spending time doing something with the impression of believing in doing that same thing, creating a difference in how people perceive accomplishing tasks.…

I also liked the aspect that a poem can be interpreted in different ways depending on how it is read, creating freedom of expression, an integral quality of a free and modern society. I chose the events in my poem for a variety of reasons. I selected them because I felt that they were the most prevalent reasons for why we divide and confide ourselves to different groups. Firstly, I chose the emancipation of women and the division of political parties across the world. Women were forbid the right to vote because of the assumption that they did not have the mental capacity to do so.…

Puritan Age Authors The Puritan Age lasted the entirety of the seventeenth century. Anne Bradstreet’s work is from early in the century, as for Jonathan Edwards, his work represents the latter half of the century. Bradstreet’s works include To My Dear and Loving Husband and Upon the Burning of Our House, both are poems that represent her faith in God and how he chooses to reward the Puritans for their faith. Opposingly, Edwards’ sermon, Sinners of an Angry God, expresses his opinion of God finding pleasure in punishing those who disagree with his faith.…

I liked all the poems that we have read this term. I even had a friend look at the poems that we were reading and she was very happy with the selection that we were given. She remembers most of them from when she went to school and told me that they were amazing poems about our society and the messages in each work were very clear. I really enjoyed Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night, by Dylan Thomas. It reminded me of my grandmother when she was fighting breast cancer.…

In Anne Bradstreet’s poem “Verses on the Burning of our House,” the speaker discusses her attempt to reconcile the loss of her earthly possessions with religious tenets and, in doing so, highlights the struggle of Puritans to maintain the religious ideal of valuing only spiritual worth, as depicted through the concept of weaned affections. Frequently in her poem, Bradstreet emphasizes the dichotomy between her emotions as she experiences the transpiring events and what she wants to feel through her employment of various literary tools. Her personification of her heart as she depicts “to my God my heart did cry / To straighten me in my Distress / And not to leave me succourless” (Bradstreet 8-10) emphasizes the strength of the speaker’s emotional…

Anne Bradstreet’s poem, “Here Follows Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666,” describes the horrific night Anne was awoken to her house on fire and the internal struggles, both emotionally and spiritually, she faced while witnessing it burn to ash. Her Puritan values greatly influenced her writing style and content, which was especially notable in this poem with the constant tug between her spiritual values and earthly valuables. The Puritans were a religious group in the late 16th and 17th centuries that became noted for a spirit of religious and moral intensity. In this poem, Bradstreet goes to bed on one night, and she is not expecting any sorrows because according to the Puritans ' values and beliefs, they believe that…
