Life is a Struggle Anne Bradstreet was a Puritan that struggles like many ours. The struggle was about the love and desire of things versus their faith and service to God. In the analysis of this poem it is important that we look at what and how she tells the story in poem. Life is truly a struggle; however the struggle is more difficult without your faith. Let’s take a look at “Here Follow Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House” by Anne Bradstreet. To understand the poem better, we have to know a little about Anne Bradstreet. In a biography by Ann Woodlief, it was noted that “Anne seems to have written poetry primarily for herself, her family, and her friends” (Woodlief) Like many Puritan women she felt dominated by the strong male presence. She used symbolism a lot in how she described the house as almost a person it seemed. She discussed where items had sat and how she missed them and the home. She wrote on in what seemed a modern way which made it easy for others and me to follow. I felt it was very similar to losing a family member and struggling with God to understand why this was allowed to happen. After time you start to realize and move past the hurt, but at first you have a strong doubt of “why did you let this happen god”. In the end it was quite clear that Anne Bradstreet’s poem was a way to cope with her loss. I was not the common thing to express this in a male dominated society. To speak out and express your thoughts was dangerous in 1666, however she did so anyways. This poem showed her fear, the way she copes by reminiscing, and finally finding hope by connecting to her Puritan faith. I found it very interesting how Anne Bradstreet showed that “Life is a Struggle”, and the way to cope with that
