Herding Calls-Personal Narrative Analysis

Would you sing to a cow? How about a goat? Believe it or not, this used to be normal for female Scandinavian shepherds, who called their animals home after grazing in nearby fields all day. In Swedish, the practice is formally called Kulning. In English, the closest translation is “Herding calls.” My first experience with it was from a video I saw while scrolling on Instagram, performed by a woman named Jonna Jinton. It had come up without my searching for it, but I listened to her perform the melodic, sad-sounding notes, and was captured by it. The power she had in that short video was incredible. An entire herd of cows came right over to her, and all she had to do was sing! To me, there was nothing more astonishing and I watched that video over and over. I immediately wanted to try it, but living just outside of New York City did not exactly present me with that opportunity. However, I knew that my parents and I would be visiting relatives in rural Poland that summer, so I prepared by singing Kulning daily, lamenting old melodies, and creating new ones. …show more content…
I took my bike out one day, to ride around the village and explore the countryside. I rode through the tall green grass until I saw a field with three cows on it, a few dozen yards from a fence. Instantly, I had the urge to recite the melodies I had memorized, and halted. Would it work? Was I capable? What if someone heard? ⦁ As I was reading this essay I couldn't help but become continually intrigued by the apparent, and somewhat subliminal illustrations the writer portrays throughout the story. For example, Passarello's influence related to "Harpy" strongly relies on herself, her lifestyle, but more importantly, her mother. She cites her mother's role in her college drama club play, The Crucible, providing insight and luring the reader into an oncoming paragraph of interesting rhetoric as she expels how her mother shrieked, nay, screamed at an imaginary demon-bird. What is this creature?…

On the onset, there does not seem to be any difference between poetry and song. After all, there are several different lyrics used in songs that have been derived from poetry. Two examples of this idea can be found in the musical poetry of Amiri Baraka's poem "Wailers" and Todd Rundgren's "Wailing Wall". Both poetry and song are literary poems that deal with the emotions of a particular individual, regarding a particular instance or situation. Therefore, poetry verses and the lines of a song often follow a rhyming, expression, and creativity, giving a sense of melody to the verses, even when the lines are merely recited.…

Why I Sing Chaeley Winkler I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t singing. Of course, I know there was time before I could speak or burble as infants do, so there must have existed a certain silence before sound, however the mere thought of being so silent—unable to reach out with voice or touch—disturbs me to no end. But these thoughts of a time before sound hadn’t quite crossed my mind until I began to question the finer, tinier oddities in my life. These questions emerged at around the age of seven, before they had manifested as inner thoughts.…

Native American religion is peculiar, to say the least. In most religions, there is a central belief that everyone in that religion follows; however, Native Americans do not have beliefs cast in stone that everyone must to adhere to. In fact, it is quite difficult to refer to the beliefs of different Native American tribes as one religion, although, there are many similarities between them. Perhaps, it is more appropriate to separate each Native American tribe’s belief system into a different sect of a common religion, which they share. In general, Native Americans, themselves, do not refer to their spiritual practices as a religion, rather a way of life and essential part of their survival.…

I believe that life is about communication, listening and understanding the world around us. Sound is one of the most important aspects of communication, without sound it is difficult to listen and communicate. In Listening to Wild Soundscapes Bernie Krause argues “It's the world's first theatrical, acoustic manifestation that among other things kind of provides us with instant feedback as to how we're treating the natural world.” What a powerful concept that I feel everyone should understand and feed off of, I believe that the world around speaks to us in many ways and the information we learn from our environment may enlighten our listening to the people around us. In The Poetics of Space Across Latitudes, Gordon Hempton asserts,…

Religious experiences have often been associated with a specific, culturally-set location and particular types of music. Anglican or Lutheran Christianity, for example, takes place in the church and is accompanied by organ music (see for example Evans 2006). Contemporary shamanism, as a form of spiritual practice, differs from these types of associations, as the shamanic practitioner can move the sacred space easily from one location to the next. Music and sounds are essential parts of this process.…
