For my first journal, I choose “Hercules Upholding the Heavens” by artist Paul Manship. It is located in the sculpture courts in the fine arts museum of Houston. What initially attracted me to this piece of art was the sense of power it radiated. Growing up, Hercules has been one of my favorite Disney movies; so having the chance to see one of my biggest fascinations come to life before my eyes obviously sparked something in me. The sculpture itself portrays Hercules performing the eleventh of his twelve labors. When he convinced Atlas to retrieve the golden apples that were guarded by Landon, a three-headed dragon. So Atlas entrusted the weight of the heavens to Hercules. When looking at the sculpture one of the first things I noticed were both the club that he holds in his left hand and the lions cloaks that surrounds him. Both man and beast combined together radiate power.

Throughout most of my life, all the stories I heard about Hercules were with him being the hero; the protector of the people. The aura it gives off gave everyone hope including me. Maybe they’re just old folktale stories, but if I had to choose I would want Hercules to be the one who protects the people. I mean just imagine having a god walking amongst us. Personally there was nothing I dislikes about the sculpture. I loved everything about it down to every detail.
In conclusion, “Hercules upholding the heavens” by artist Paul Manship was a piece of art that I fell in love with. It is by far one of my favorite art pieces. Hercules was one of my heroes growing up and just seeing him being portrayed exactly how I pictured him is beyond perfect. Manship couldn’t have done a better job. Hercules was a demigod, but here is shown as the true god he really us. Upholding the heavens where the gods home is on his shoulders just really shows us how powerful he really is.
