It is important for a person to find and know their identity. This is important because he/she can be friends with those around them that have a similar identity. Also, they can act as the person they truly are, not who they think they are. They need to know who they are because it is hard to get through struggles with a person who has a separate personality from himself. April struggles to find her identity because she knows she is different, but does not know how. Hercules does not know his identity, and he struggles to find it, as he thinks he is something he is not.

Hercules thought his purpose was to get back to his family in Mount Olympus, but then finds out that his purpose is to be a hero. April thought her purpose was to just be there, but finds out that she is meant to be different. Also, along his journey to find his true identity, Hercules saves many people along the way. April only saves herself when she takes her mask off, but she also helps others realize that they don’t need masks to know who they are and where they fit in. April learns her identity through two of her teacher’s lessons, one about “Plato’s Allegory of the Cave,” and the other in chess while Hercules learns his identity by learning how to contain his strength and using it to save others. April and Hercules may have similarities, but there are many important differences in their stories as well.
Students can learn many things about their own search for their identity by watching April and Hercules.
