Hercules thought his purpose was to get back to his family in Mount Olympus, but then finds out that his purpose is to be a hero. April thought her purpose was to just be there, but finds out that she is meant to be different. Also, along his journey to find his true identity, Hercules saves many people along the way. April only saves herself when she takes her mask off, but she also helps others realize that they don’t need masks to know who they are and where they fit in. April learns her identity through two of her teacher’s lessons, one about “Plato’s Allegory of the Cave,” and the other in chess while Hercules learns his identity by learning how to contain his strength and using it to save others. April and Hercules may have similarities, but there are many important differences in their stories as well.
Students can learn many things about their own search for their identity by watching April and Hercules. They can learn that they are different and unique in many ways, but it is important to know their identity so they can relate to others about struggles and hardships. When they hit a roadblock in life they need to know that they are not always who everyone thinks they are. Students also should know that they have a good purpose in somebody else’s
