Hercules Myth Vs Myth

How is it that people grow up with false information about mythology? It is all thanks to Disney. Disney’s 1997, version of the ancient myth, Hercules, is completely inaccurate. With a compelling storyline, Disney takes people on an adventure through ancient Greece. However, the movie is not the same as the myth. Although the two have many similarities, the differences outweigh them. The myth and the movie do not translate with their messages. The Disney film is an unreliable source to understand ancient Greek mythological history. When Hercules is first introduced in the movie, he is a baby with his parents. The happy parents however are not Hercules legitimate parents. According the myth, Hercules parents are actually Zeus and a mortal

The first major differences in the movie is Hercules parentage. His parents in the original myth are Zeus and the mortal woman Alcmene. The myth depicts that while her husband was in the Trojan war, Zeus came down from Mt. Olympus, disguised as her husband, impregnating her with Hercules. The next day her real husband returned and impregnated her with another child. Zeus was actually married to Hera and Disney probably figured adultery was not a good topic for young children.…

    J. Michael Straczynski, the American writer and producer, said “[t]he point of mythology or myth is to point to the horizon and to point back to ourselves: This is who we are; this is where we came from; and this is where we're going. And a lot of Western society over the last hundred years - the last 50 years really - has lost that. We have become rather aimless and wandering.” Today when people think of the mythology of Rome, Greece, or Egypt, they might think of statues in museums or parks or distant unrelatable characters.…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…
