Pip’s old friend and fatherly figure, Joe is a perfect example that you do not have to be rich, or a gentleman in order to be considered successful. Joe likes working at the forge and he is good at it, and all he wanted to do is share that passion with his good friend Pip. Second of all Joe in the end did have more money than was expected when he was able to pay off all of Pip’s debts from becoming a gentleman in London. When Pip found out Magwitch was his secret benefactor he immediately quit using the money that was from him which is not a good way to keep up with payments, so Joe went and payed all of it off which was no small amount of money. This showed that Joe is a very good and kind person and that he was humble enough not to let on that he had that large sum of money and to use it to help out his friend Pip without being asked.
