Early Life
Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley England on September 21st, 1866. (Bio.com) Wells was the youngest of his three siblings. He had two brothers, Frank (1857-1933), Fred and a sister named Fanny (1855-1854)(A Political Life). Little did he know that was the start of his career. Bored and unable to do anything, Joseph Wells brought him books to read from the local library. Charles Dickens and Washing Irving are just two examples of authors Herbert read from. The books reinforced his desire to write. After Wells recovered he enrolled in Thomas Morley's Commercial Academy. The academy mainly focused on copperplate handwriting and tradesman skills. Wells continued to attend the private school until 1880. Earlier in 1877, his father fractured his thigh leaving him unable to play cricket. Needing money, his two brothers became apprentices to various jobs. Herbert would also become an apprentice in 1880 to a draper at the Southsea Drapery Emporium. Simply put, he hated the job. Harsh thirteen hour days and cheap living conditions did not appeal to Young Wells. In 1883 Herbert convinced his mother to release him from the apprenticeship by threatening suicide.
