“We know that the Earth is (or is not) at rest because...” The two philosophers Heraclides Ponticus and Aristarchus of Samos lived back to back as Ponticus lived from 390 BC – 310 BC and Samos lived 310 BC – 230 BC. Samos was a radical believer in the heliocentric theory of the universe, while Ponticus believed in the geocentric model; however, he believed that the Earth rotated on its axis, but it is at rest otherwise. Should these men have ever met and spoke proper English, then they would have a very stimulating debate over their views of planetary motion. An argument of such matter would have most likely included several personally attacks for it would have taken place in public, and humiliating
