When Heracles arrived to the king’s throne, he asks him what his labors are. The king first says that he has to slay the lion that haunts the forests of Nemea. The king also warns him that the lion cannot be harmed by the arrows of a mortal. Soon after, Heracles goes to the forest, and enters the cave of the lion, and swings at the lion with the club. This has no effect on the lion, so he throws all his weapons, and strangles it to death with his bare hands. He then returns to the king, wearing the lion as armor over his shoulders. The king then tells Heracles that his next labor is to kill the Hydra of Lerna, a serpent water beast that has many heads. Heracles and Iolaus, a hero entered the swamp to try and find the monster. Heracles tells Iolaus to cover their mouths and noses with cloth to protect themselves from the poisonous fumes that come from the mouth of the Hydra. Heracles fires flaming arrows in the lair of the Hydra, but the outcome is that it has no effect on the Hydra what so ever. He then tries to hit the serpent to death with a club. When this also fails to work, he asks Iolaus to hand him his sword, so that he will try and cut all of his heads
