Heracles: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Heracles had approached the mansion. Gardens and fences circled around the building, with at least one guard posted on every few yards of fence. This must be it, Heracles thought. He was told that it would look like someone very rich and stuck-up would live there, but it would also look like hardly any of his staff really cared much for the owner. Which was true. The guards looked like they couldn’t care less except for the fact they wanted to get paid. Heracles was supposed to break into this place. Scanning the area to find a way inside, Heracles saw and open window that looked just big enough to fit through. On the downside, he still couldn’t find a breach in the fence.
Heracles troded around at the edge of the woods until he was finally able to come to a decision on what his plan would be. He would walk up to the front gate and try to get the guards to simply let him in. And he did just that.

Thankfully, Heracles was given a rather good alias.
“John Cena.” Heracles smiled. The guards looked at him shell-shocked.
“Oh my god, sorry, sir. You can go right in.” The shorter guard pressed a button and the gate slowly opened up. Heracles walked through the gate and pumped his fist. Success! After the guards had stopped watching him in awe, he made his way over to the open window, and he slipped inside the mansion.
The window led Heracles into what seemed like the belly of the beast. Also known as, a living room with horribly painted portraits of the owner (or maybe it was just the way the owner’s face looked) on every single bit of wall space. My gods, he thought. The sooner I get out of here the better.
Heracles snuck over to the spiral staircase, tiptoeing all the way to the top floor. Walking down the hallway, he tried to remember which room was the right one. Was it the 5th on the left or the right? Standing between the two doors he came to a decision. He opened the door on his left and hoped for the

It also demonstrated when Edwards said “It would be dreadful to suffer this fierceness and wrath of Almighty God one moment, but you must suffer it all eternity” (Edwards 3). The blackened walls with cracks running throughout its length indicated that the person resided there for a great period of time. The stained glass on the wall gave a different impression. It showed the period “wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open, and stands in calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners…” (Edwards 3).…

Throughout history authors have reflected the issues of society through their work. Kate Chopin, Charlotte Gilman, and Susan Glaspell are three such authors who address the oppressive nature of men and confines of marriage in their classic short stories. One similarity this collection of authors have in common is the time period in which they live(late nineteenth century to early twentieth century). It is important to understand the lack of women's rights and what was expected of a wife during this time to grasp the symbolic meaning behind their short stories. They authors incorporate this theme into these three stories: “The Story of an Hour,” “The Yellow Wallpaper,” and “A Jury of Her Peers.”…

After Athena inquires as to the previous state of the building, Telemachus’ answer comes laced through and through with a barely concealed grief. “Since you ask me these questions as my guest—/ This, no doubt, was once a perfect house,/ Wealthy and fine, when its master was still home” (1.249-251). Though the building still stands, his sense of comfort and belonging has been taken from it. The “master” he refers to could be him or his father- Odysseus is gone, but Telemachus’ power, and mastery of his house, has also been compromised. This struggle is one that Telemachus’ grandfather, Odysseus’ father, shares.…

There is no such thing as total freedom for there’s always some sort of restriction. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper,” a young woman is forced to live in a house as confined as her own mind, surrounded by a garden and world as open as the rest of society, which is to say walled off and locked with a facade of being free. In this story Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrates the theme of freedom and confinement through her use of diction and figurative language used to describe the setting. When describing the house, Gilman says, “the windows are barred for children,” (Gilman, p608) just like the mind of our unreliable narrator, not allowing her to be free, forcing her to look through bars to get a glimpse of the outside world. There is also a “great immovable bed that looks like its been through wars.”…
