The Hera games occurred every four years in between the Olympic Games. The Hera Games are games put in place to honor the goddess, Hera. Hera is the wife and sister of Zeus. Her name could also be spelled, Heraia. Hera is the most famous goddess and she is the goddess of women and marriage. Hera was known to rule "over the women and the earth"(Leder 3). Women should not have to honor and look up to a man such as Zeus. The women should be able to honor and look up to a powerful woman that they could see as a role model. The clothing the girls wore were appropriate unlike the men 's wear. The women wore tunics almost as long as their knees and their hair "free." Some people say that the women dressed as a man during the games. They could compete with no shoes or simple sandals. The Hera games were not for married women but for "young, adolescent, and unmarried women [that] competed in age groups"(Leder 3).There were a few types of games that took place during the event. The women 's games took place a year earlier than the men 's games and took place every four years after. Citizens from any Greek city - state could participate in the games. The one most important event that took place during the Hera games were foot races. The person that won the games received olive branches and "a share of the cow sacrificed to the goddess"(Leder 3). The men 's games consisted of running, wrestling, and boxing on the first day. The second day of the games was at the hippodrome which is a horse track. Also on the second day there was discus throwing, javelin throwing, wrestling, jumping, and running. On the third day there were many running races. On the fourth day there was wrestling, boxing, and a race where a person would run in all of their amour. Lastly, on the fifth day the winners got wreaths and in the evening there were celebrations with banquets(Woff 10-25). There was not a need for Women to participate in Men 's games

In their eyes a successful Olympics is equitable to the public eye and what the public eye is unable to see or rather, uninterested in, becomes insignificant. Yes, the IOC does provide athletic bodies of respective developing nations with some form of monetary assistance with 90 percent of raised funds going to National Olympic Committees, International Sport Federations and Olympic Organizing Committees. The further 10 percent covering the IOCs’ own administrative costs, a quiet $600 million dollars to disperse between its 115 members over a four-year period.…

After the success of the 1896 Games, the Olympics hit an all time low that almost ended the games entirely. The 1900 Paris Olympics and the 1904 St. Louis Olympics were two of the worst Olympics ever to be held. The Games in Paris did not have a stadium and were notoriously disorganized, but these were the first games women took part in. When St. Louis held the Olympic Games there were roughly 650 athletes who participated, but 580 were from the United States. The Games rebounded when the 1906 Intercalated Games (they were called this because it was held within the third Olympiad) which were held in Athens.…

Ancient athletics were not exactly welcoming to women participants, but there are a few text sources and artistic evidence that a few instances did occur, and were even encouraged. It is evident that women not only did not participate in the Olympic sports, but they were banned from even spectating. This was due to the fact that men competed in the nude as a religious ceremony to honor Zeus, and in history there is a common theme of women not being allowed in order so that it goes well (think how pirates never wanted women on their ships). Even with that stopping them, women found ways to get involved in the ancient athletics in other ways unique to them. Though married women in antiquity were banned from spectating at certain men’s sporting events due to the lack of clothing worn by athletes, there were several opportunities for women to be involved in games themselves, as chariot owners, gladiatrixes, and participants in the Heraean Games.…
