Zeus forced Aphrodite to marry him because he was trying to settle a battle between the gods. The gods were fighting over Aphrodite because she is the goddess of love and beauty. Since Hephaestus is so ugly, Aphrodite was disgusted with him and didn’t want to marry him. Hephaestus’s most famous story is him catching Aphrodite having an affair. When Aphrodite was forced to marry him, she was in love with Ares, the god of war. Hephaestus knew of their affair and devised a way to catch them. He made a net that was extremely fine and strong, he then used that net to “catch” them lying with each other. Hephaestus put the two on display for all the gods to see in order to be judged by the others. The gods laughed and made Hephaestus embarrassed. He has also made many things such as armor for heroes or weapons for other gods. Some of his popular crafts include Cupid’s arrows, Artemis’s arrows, Aegis, Achilles’s armor, and Europa’s gold basket.
