The id, ego, and superego are three parts of the human personality which are part of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic personality theory. These three parts combine to create the different aspects of human behavior patterns. This can be used to determine Henry Turner’s life, with using his natural ID in life more than his superego, he becomes a person that not many can stand to be around and makes the people he care about not able to stand him. This leads him to do many wrongful doings that he doesn’t even realize he is participating in. However, in my opinion, Henry Turner’s natural state would have to be his superego state due to after an accident occurring in this film, his actions and thoughts would prove to others that this would be his true state. Henry’s Id is very prominent in several parts of the movie. For example, when Henry leaves the house for a walk, he indulges his Id by going out to see a adult movie, buying ice cream, buying a puppy and buying a hotdog. By this we can see he is giving in too his pleasure seeking Id. In the same way, Henry also uses his Id when talking to his daughter in one of the first few scenes of the movie. When speaking to his daughter he tells her sorry but then proceeds to almost guilt trip her by …show more content…
With his experience at the housewarming party for his old friends, Henry hears others conversing about how he will never be the same and he is almost challenged and odd. This causes him and his wife to flee the party and Henry going into a saddened state. Furthermore, Henry talks to Bradley, his physical therapist, about this situation and being able to fit in which is a large Superego scene. In addition, Henry also has a scene in the movie where he is trying to call his daughter during school because he sees a note that says she is absolutely miserable there, he continues to try to persuade the lady on the phone to talk to his daughter to cheer her

Frederic Henry had major changes throughout the novel. His attitude towards the war, Catherine, and friends had all changed significantly.
