One of the most important aspects for a successful team is effective communication. Without proper communication between members, a team can become dysfunctional. It is crucial for the team to know when to meet, how to use meeting time, and the primary mode of communication. These are very important if a team is wanting to be strong and functional. In the case of Henry Tam and The MGI Team, it is clear the biggest issues are resulting from poor communication. The fundamental management problem of Henry's team is poor communication surrounding meetings. Communication is a large part of meetings which are critical to a project moving forward. One solution could be to have more face to face meetings, but separate them according to purpose. By increasing the number of meetings, they will be able to update each other more often. This would also separate the two focuses. This allows them adequate time to discuss all their ideas. According to Polzer, Vargas, and Elfenbein, the meetings were more of a brainstorming session. This was okay for the creative types, but the business minded wanted to see more progress (2003). An extra meeting would give them a dedicated time to focus on the project's actual future. This would allow the creatives to innovate, but provide structure for their meetings. Sasha would pass the on the topics discussed in the business meeting to his colleagues. The team can use certain tools to help each other stay focused. A team charter and scope statement are excellent for setting boundaries. While a work breakdown structure (WBS) and meeting minutes can keep teams on track (Moore, 2012). The team should set their expectations and goals in a team charter and scope statement. After establishing these intentions, they could organize their priorities into a WBS. This would allow members to keep up with what everyone else was working on. They could also record the minutes from the meeting which would aid in keeping everyone on the same page. Knowing what needs accomplished and when helps a team stay organised.
