It may have been a successful way to maintain order and peace within a society; however, its invalidity lies on how people lost their freedom to acquire true happiness. Every individual has a freedom to have a dream they want to achieve. An individual may choose to rusticate and create a farming business, support the military to protect a nation, or be employed in production factories. Each of those contribute to the development of a society while the people who do it, choose to do it without getting coerced. It is simply their inclination to do what they considered apt to be satisfied.
