Henry Ford decided to make the minimum wage $5 in order to decrease staff turnover. The workers used to be paid $2.25 for a nine-hour shift, however since staff turnover was so common, that caused production to be delayed. Henry Ford realized that he needed to raise the daily pay in order to keep staff. By doing this, Ford cut the factory’s expenses. They were no longer spending money on training new employees. Furthermore, paying workers more than other employers pay their workers causes the staff to believe that they have it better than staff at other companies/factories – therefore the staff then does a better job during the work day.
In order to receive the additional pay, the workers were checked up on to make sure they were acting “American”
