Henry Ford College’s moto is “Future Driven.” I am here to better myself as an athlete, as a student, and most importantly as a person. I was recruited, and awarded a scholarship to play volleyball at Henry Ford College (HFC), however that is only one part of the story. Majoring in community leadership, HFC will help me achieve my goal of becoming a philanthropist. The habits I will learn playing volleyball here combined with the skills and knowledge I achieve being a student will make me the best version of myself, and that is why I am a Henry Ford Hawk.

As a women from Arab descent, athletics are not typically part of a young women’s life. A women’s job was well known to be a stay at home mom, or get a job as a nurse, lawyer, etc. in this case, it’s extremely difficult to be a successful athlete, or do anything different then that path. There were no goals, and no role models to look up to. My freshman year was my first year playing volleyball ever, and I was terrible. I spent that year mostly on the bench, but I had a long term goal in my mind to keep improving, and I never gave up. Three years later, it was finally my senior year. It was supposed to be the ‘best’ year yet, but everyone from the year before quit because they gave in to cultural stereotypes. I grew up, and became a leader for my team. I was voted 1st team all-conference, and lead the state of Michigan in digs per set. I worked a part time job as a supermarket manager in order to play for my first year of AAU volleyball, where other players have been playing for several years. My coach and I created an NCSA page for college coaches to see me play and hopefully be recruited, and I received an email from HFC, a couple weeks later and I came to an open gym. Long story short, the coach offered me a scholarship to come play for Henry Ford. If someone were to ask me four years ago if I thought this was possible, I would’ve said no. I transformed from the Arab bench …show more content…
I am here as a symbol, as a believer to all the doubters, that if you want something badly enough anything can happen. My story at HFC is bigger than just myself. I am at HFC for all the young girls out there who were told they would never accomplish their goal. Being at HFC allows me to play volleyball. It allows me to get a major in community leadership to ultimately follow my dream to run my own charity. Being at HFC is a step on my way to making my mark in the world, and to contribute to the world at large. Being here will help me become grittier, passionate, engaged, educated, and strive to constantly improve myself, and more importantly my community. I am at HFC because I believe that I can change the world, one volleyball, one textbook, and one act of kindness at a

To get an understanding of the significance of interscholastic competition at the collegiate level, simply turn on the television on a Saturday morning during college football. The sponsors, fans, pageantry, etc., is astronomical and continues to grow exponentially. Undoubtedly, college athletics is “big business” and is often viewed as a separate entity. Duke professor of public policy, economics and law, Charles T. Clotfelter, offers an interesting viewpoint on college athletics, stating faculty members’ blindness to the significance of big-time sports amounts to operating in a parallel universe, which is impossible, because the evidence is all around us and so commonplace (Etizen, 2012). Its difficulty to disagree with Clotfelter because sports are deeply rooted in our society.…

He States that college athletes sign an agreement that is a mutual agreement in which one-party is undercompensated.
