Being a student athlete is tough, and tons of people question why someone would choose to play sports at all in college, yet alone at HFC, which isn’t the first school that comes to mind …show more content…
As a women from Arab descent, athletics are not typically part of a young women’s life. A women’s job was well known to be a stay at home mom, or get a job as a nurse, lawyer, etc. in this case, it’s extremely difficult to be a successful athlete, or do anything different then that path. There were no goals, and no role models to look up to. My freshman year was my first year playing volleyball ever, and I was terrible. I spent that year mostly on the bench, but I had a long term goal in my mind to keep improving, and I never gave up. Three years later, it was finally my senior year. It was supposed to be the ‘best’ year yet, but everyone from the year before quit because they gave in to cultural stereotypes. I grew up, and became a leader for my team. I was voted 1st team all-conference, and lead the state of Michigan in digs per set. I worked a part time job as a supermarket manager in order to play for my first year of AAU volleyball, where other players have been playing for several years. My coach and I created an NCSA page for college coaches to see me play and hopefully be recruited, and I received an email from HFC, a couple weeks later and I came to an open gym. Long story short, the coach offered me a scholarship to come play for Henry Ford. If someone were to ask me four years ago if I thought this was possible, I would’ve said no. I am here as a symbol, as a believer to all the doubters, that if you want something badly enough anything can happen. My story at HFC is bigger than just myself. I am at HFC for all the young girls out there who were told they would never accomplish their goal. Being at HFC allows me to play volleyball. It allows me to get a major in community leadership to ultimately follow my dream to run my own charity. Being at HFC is a step on my way to making my mark in the world, and to contribute to the world at large. Being here will help me become grittier, passionate, engaged, educated, and strive to constantly improve myself, and more importantly my community. I am at HFC because I believe that I can change the world, one volleyball, one textbook, and one act of kindness at a
