Henry E. Bearman Scholarship

I believe that I should be selected as the recipient of the Henry E. Bearman Scholarship because I am heavily involved in the Department for Applied Economics and Statistics, I spend a lot of my time giving back to the community, and I am an avid lover of the outdoors. In the fall of 2015 and 2016, I was a Teaching Assistant for Sustainable Development (APEC100). Through this position, I worked for Dr. Kent Messer in helping to educate students in the topic of sustainable development. As a TA, I connected with the students in the class and helped inspire them to develop a passion for the environment. Additionally, I gave them general academic advice, such as helping them choose a major, telling them ways they could get more involved in the …show more content…
Lastly, I love the outdoors and try to spend as much time outside as possible. I enjoy going on hikes and exploring areas that I haven’t been in before. This winter I went backpacking for three weeks in Costa Rica, where I got to experience the country’s natural beauty. It was a life-changing experience as I hiked in volcanos, went in hot springs, and visited beautiful beaches, cloud forests, and rain forests. My appreciation for nature grew so much stronger during that trip, and I hope to be lucky enough to go on another backpacking trip next winter. The scholarship application says this is “awarded to honor Mr. Bearman’s life of service to others and his love of the outdoors.” I believe that I am the perfect recipient for this award because of my heavy involvement in the Department for Applied Economics and Statistics, which has consisted of being a TA in the APEC department, my desire to give back to the community, and my love of the outdoors. All of these activities have allowed me to combine my love of the nature with my desire to help others. I look forward to seeing what adventures lie ahead in my future and how I can continue my quest to help preserve the

There are various reasons as to why I’m deserving of the Etna-Dixmont School Scholarship. The most prevalent reason is my family history and connection with the town of Dixmont. My father and my grandparents moved to from Massachusetts to Dixmont, Maine when he was in second grade. My grandfather bought a house on Route 9 in Dixmont, and some other land in addition to that. The Dixmont Corner Church was built in 1835, and had an active one room school house next to it that was built in 1808.…

All year the mountains are amazing; I never get bored because every season brings new activities that I love including hiking, biking, rafting, snowshoeing, skiing, horseback riding, rock climbing, and camping. Mountain sports and the raw beauty of the mountains fuel my love for the beautiful place I’ve grown up in. Being with my family or my closest friends in the mountains doing almost any activity out doors would easily describe the most perfect day that I wouldn't trade for anything else. The mountains always manage to keep my attention; in the winter they are white and sparkling, the spring they are green with flowers everywhere, the summer they are leafy and so pleasant, and then when fall arrives and there is every color you can imagine it is so vibrant and mind blowing. I feel like I am a good candidate for this scholarship because, as a senior, any and all money earned and received will help me ease the burden of attending college. My goal throughout my whole childhood was to receive a full ride scholarship to the college of my dreams; however, as time has gone on and I have matured I have come to the realization that, that dream is not as achievable as I once believed it to be. I have worked hard, inside and outside of the classroom, making the grades and creating the resume that colleges are looking for, and in response I have been offered tuition waivers. Which ultimately means I am still responsible for paying for my books, room and board, part of the tuition cost, and mandatory fees.…
